Replies to Skimfeed.com feedback: 65 please roll back all the theming to v1. i dont mind the new content, just v1 v1 v1 please - 2015-10-29-08-41-58 - Theme/layout needs work. It's the number one todo on the list and will be worked on next. 64 This should be a search bar - 2015-10-22-11-59-05 - I was working on just that before I got distracted by other projects. The code is done, just needs polish and pushing out, but I just don't have the time anymore :( 63 On Ubuntu/Chrome, can't make it small again. Click on Mobile, clicking on other things and / or Mobile makes no changes. HALP - 2015-10-12-17-25-45 - Settings are stored in cookies. - The far left reset button should always work (it's Jquery/Javascript that simply deletes all Skimfeed cookies, every browser should be capable of handling that). - If Reset fails it's time to delete all Skimfeed cookies manually and leave feedback here that the reset button didn't work! 62 How can I contribute? - 2015-10-05-19-27-25 - Interesting question! The main areas that are weak on Skimfeed are: - CSS Theme. This has always been a weak point, but as everything else improved it got left behind again. - More feed ideas and page ideas. Around 20% of the pages and feeds have come from user suggestions. - Marketing - share out skimfeed with friends, tweets are great, let people know if you like it and leave feedback if you don't! All feedback is read even if not acted on right away. 61 Can you remove AndrewChen, hes not updating his RSS stream any more. Thanks. - 2015-10-24-08-52-04 - Done! 60 whats with all the techinsider???????????/ - 2015-10-11-14-07-02, Please mark the tech insider posts somehow. They are garbage and no better than buzzfeed for tech. - 2015-10-23-12-55-12 - Agreed, they're getting a little fiesty with those video articles. Tech insider moved to Agg for now. 59 stop moving around the different publishers! - 2015-09-28-10-40-20 - That's the layout AI at work. Implemented because feeds were getting stale on weekends. It optimises the box arrangement so the best links and sources are floated up automagically. 58 wtf.. it thought i was a bot? that was filopotomas weird. - 2015-09-27-01-17-12 - That's the adaptive bot detecting AI at work. It's set to flag activity of x% of users as bots per day to train itself, and today was your lucky day! - So long as you pass the simple "I'm human" test it instantly unflags, so all is good. 57 Would be nice to have an aggregator for the "life hacks" sites. Thanks. - 2015-09-25-16-40-09 - I see lifehacker, Gizmodo, Kotaku and Techradar in the Lifehacker network. - Googling around the life hacking space, there are a few good sites about minimalism, but no other high quality, actually useful, sites like Lifehacker with lots of content. - With enough sources it would make an interesting page though. Any ideas? 56 A search bar that filters the links shown on the page instantly would be awesome. - 2015-09-17-03-50-54 - Someone suggested this before, but I still don't see a possible use case where this would be used...and in those few rare times it might be needed the user could use browser based search (CTRL+F for exaple). Am I missing something? 55 a comment section would be great - 2015-09-07-10-53-13 - A good idea at a sadly prescient time. ----- - I'm concerned about the level of censorship on HN. - On HN any submission around particular topics is quickly flagged and eventually disabled/blocked- by a mod/admin, user filter bubble, or organised groups. You'll never know what, and you'll never even know it's happened. Unknown unknowns, and that's the scariest type of censorship. Right now it's anything even slightly, and possibly innocently, discussing females in tech (IMO an important topic that deserves discussion). What else is being censored? What's next to be censored? - A recent piece on Marissa Meyer whjch you may or may not agree with, I believe you still have a right to see and form your own opinion about and not have it made for you by it's absence, HN disagrees: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-09/nyu-professor-yahoo-should-be-euthanized-and-marissa-mayer-is-the-most-overpaid-ceo-in-history - The above link was censored on HN. Skimfeed got it, and it was top of What's hot/most popular. That's the tip of the iceberg in terms of scale. - We need an alternative to HN. The time is right, as Gilmore famously said: "The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it". HN (not YC, just HN) is now damage. We need to route around it. ----- 53 Bloomberg - 2015-08-21-12-48-1 - Sadly Bloomberg turned off RSS/XML feeds network wide around 2006. Still not reactivated. - No Emily Chang :( 52 this whole responsive FOSHIZZLE you've got going ruins EVERYTHING for me. roll back to V1 PLEASE! i always hit ZOOM 120%, and sometimes i have the window narrow and sometimes wide. it SCREWS WITH MY BRAIN - 2015-08-21-11-52-31 - Why do you hit zoom 120%? - Yeah, that floating what's hot box is screwing everything on intermittent widths...its a CSS issue. - Click the box titles to go to sub pages, you might like them more! or click the What's hot title and it takes you to a non-responsive, admin style view of that categories main page. - The general architecture of the frontend has had good reviews this time round, so it's unlikely to change unless something MUCH better appears! :D - Lastly, you can also use the settings buttons to hide the What's hot box. This will make the site 100% responsive and consistent! 51 Love this site, use it all the time. Is is possible to get a What's Hot box on a Custom page? Guessing that's a big query load but thought I'd ask and pass along how much I love this site. - 2015-08-18-15-15-05 - The custom pages actually did have a What's hot/popular box until a few months ago when it was removed. It slowed page load to 5 seconds and had massive server load, now it's around 0.03 seconds with next to no server load per page load...a huge difference! - The other issue with having What's hot on custom pages is the different visitor counts of pages, and hence feeds. For example, the tech page gets massive pageviews compared to Comics. So if you have Tech feeds and Comic feeds in your custom page you'd only see Tech in the What's hot box. Unless the algorithm took pageviews into account. Which is a whole other sack of ducks. - Any solution would also need caching to be fast enough for use. - So, for now, you're absolutely right, it's just too heavy on the server. Sorry! - And thanks for enjoying the site! - OK, just gone ahead and upgraded the custom feed system from V3 -> V5. Now includes latest and What's hot ability. Enjoy! - Note: Might be removed if it destroys the server :P 50 Not sure if relevant, but here's a website startup related (asia) techinasia. Once again TYVM for MMA tab - 2015-08-14-00-40-19 - No problemo! Techinasia is a fantastic suggestion. Added. Still looking for regularly updated sites with startup news from: India, Europe, South America, Africa. - Aaaand TechinAsia removed. The 40 second page load is simply unacceptable. Excellent articles though once they do come through. Someone let me know if they ever do fix it and I'll re-add. 49 Could you add : stratechery RSS feed? - 2015-08-13-15-48-53 - Looks good, added to tech. 48 What have you done to the theme ? Please revert to the standard white build, it was clean and neat - 2015-08-13-04-59-43 - Standard white build? But I thought everyone hated that? Complaints of "arrrgh my eyes" and "I'm going blind CHANGE IT BACK" were common when it was made default. Even now, if you change the blackground to FFF in firefox dev (Hit F12) you'll see it's a little too bright and lacks structure. 47.1 Bring back the Dark theme asap - 2015-08-13-01-25-08 47.2 Bring back the black! - 2015-08-13-03-53-50 - Dark theme has returned. Looks a little too spaced out tho. But I don't want a theme to change the architecture, just the colors...so it'll have to stick for now. 46 what happened to the color options? - 2015-08-12-14-38-07 - Todays new layout changed a few things making the old themes unusable without a rework. The tech to apply them is still in the JS, so it's just a case of finding the time and inspiration to make fresh themes/color options. Sorry! 45 stop flubadubbing with the interface guys! - 2015-08-12-08-55-55 - But it looked so janky before! Now it's all clean and nice :D (And aligned better!) - We will wait and see what baby feedback jesus bring us... 44 thx for the site.. do u dev in realtime? - 2015-08-12-05-39-11 - Real time and on the live production server #CTCIDGAF 43 love the extended timeline. great job! - 2015-08-10-20-13-18 - Thanks! - For those wondering what this is about - click the titles on a box to access the past 24 hours of news for that feed. - Aaaannd they've been has absorbed them into the cache system for even more speed! 42 Why is Business Insider the first box? - 2015-08-10-07-26-25 - The box ordering is handled by the AI. To be clear, Skimfeed is and remains non commercial, no money has changed hands, no favors have been offered or accepted and no quests completed. - My guess is they just write damn good headlines, with quality content behind them. - Another way of saying it, I'm as surprised as you are that they beat Hacker News. 41 MMA? Really? - 2015-08-10-06-26-54 - Someone requested it, together with football/soccer, so it's in (probably a Brit (:shakes fist:)). It's pretty popular. (But all caps, and stands out in the middle like a huge pimple!). 40 v1 please, you make me sick with this whole cookie thing!!!!! - 2015-08-05-17-21-59 40.1 alright. thanks for listening to me about v1, and i understand your logic, v1 was heavy on your servers etc. but please, i use a ton of browsers across different devices, and sometimes (like once a day) i wanna check skimfeed out. each and every time i need to configure (light theme, 10 links, star after 1h) because i clean the history all the time. omg. v1 please. ;) - 2015-08-05-17-24-44 - I don't want to lock in a default theme permanently, because testing new things is fun, including themes, so that's out. The next best solution is URL query strings instead of cookies. This is a pretty big deal and would mean changing multiple things, many for the better. The original reason to use cookies was to make the jquery easier, but I think the site could move to query strings. The problem with this is they need to be added to every internal link on the client side using Javascript/Jquery. Not a pretty task. - In the end though, even query strings would require clicks to set it right everytime you load the site from fresh, unless you store the query stringed URL as a bookmark. The only solution you will be happy with is default settings that suit your exact requirements., which as above, can't happen due to A/B testing. - Conclusion. Investigating use of Query strings. But it looks like a big task for small gain, likely to be ignored for bigger fish. Sorry! 39 Why am I no longer seeing Lifehacker? - 2015-08-03-07-44-01 - Fixed! 38 Thank you for this incredible site. That is all for now :-D - 2015-08-01-16-25-56 - These comments keep the site running :D 37 Hello, i'm a big fan of this site. I would like to include our site(SITENAMEHERE) news feed to Skimfeed - I checked the site out. It cannot be included in the main skimfeed list for the following reasons: Indian focus (most Skimfeed traffic is US), very slow loading. Sorry man, not this time. 36.1 roll back to v1 PLEASE. or sidehost it somewhere? skimfeed.com/v1? - 2015-07-22-19-52-11 36.2 v1 v1 v1 v1! I hate that EVERY time i go on the site I have to hide the settings block at top (no, i dont accept cookies, yes, i use different browsers each time, etc) - 2015-07-22-19-53-24 - V1 was incredibly database heavy. To run v1 with how many users skimfeed has now would need around 3 servers. Impossibility! (even as a side load) - You NEED to accept cookies...the site has been under heavy bot traffic recently, one way to stop that that has been suggested is to implement a captcha with cookie. So just turn on cookies already!! Even if you just whitelist skimfeed only for cookies, that should be sufficient. 35 Maybe a box to submit feeds? Are they RSS btw? - 2015-07-19-22-33-59 - Feeds can be submitted right into the feedback box! Some are RSS, some XML, some custom. 34 I really love the site! - 2015-07-18-14-36-23 - Thanks MOM! 33 Please consider creating a Programming section. - 2015-07-17-14-37-14 - Agreed. Looking for feeds now. - Update: Looked, but there's sparse content, and even the most popular sites are updated once a month, or a few times a year even (Joels site, Coding Horror). Not enough for a page I think! 32 how many different fonts and sizes can you put on one page - 2015-07-14-21-19-42 - Going for the record :D - Seriously tho, 800+ links on the main page, +popular +latest, and it all has to look good on desktop, mobile, tablet, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, AND be completely readable and quick scannable (on ALL those devices) AND have multiple nice color schemes. And then the boxes don't line up. FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU. 31 Still love this page. Have you considered pulling in the most popular articles that users save on Pocket? -@pbbroyles - 2015-07-13-18-52-31 - Not considered that particular possibility (Pocket feeds), but personal feeds have been discussed. It would mean implementing a login system and allowing anyone to submit feeds to the database and the security, scaling, and dormant feed issues that come with that. It's a bigger job than it looks on the surface, but it has been on the "someday" list for a few months now. 30 It would be awesome if you could allow custom font size so as to avoid eye strain. Awesome work still - 2015-07-12-22-41-59 - Yup, their have been multiple requests for font/size sliders. Implementing it makes it harder to drastically change layouts later, so it generally gets dropped as a low priority task. But it's on the experiment with list and I'm always playing with possible solutions. 29 The site is wonderful and convenient. Could you have a mobile version though? Mobile Firefox only goes down to 2 columns. Maybe below a certain screen size, reduce to 1 column, and boost font size? Thanks. - 2015-07-09-21-47-04 - Hacked together a quick mobile solution. Check the new mobile button and hit me up with feedback if you feel it. 28 Thank you for adding the mma tab. One of my fave sports of all combat sports - 2015-07-01-20-59-55 - It was a user request, but sure I'll take the credit :P 27 Perhaps gaming could include a section for links to new indie browser games - 2015-06-30-21-59-24 - It could...any websites in particular you'd like? 26 Perhaps pick up links are that 404-ing and remove them? - 2015-06-29-05-49-13 - Maybe something to check the popular links every 5 minutes could be a solution. But for now, too rare I think (I've never seen a 404 linked from skimfeed!). 25 I love it! - 2015-06-27-17-48-01 - Thanks! 24 Is there a way to exclude certain sites from the popular list? Specifically, I don't pay for PandoDaily, nor will I ever do so. I get frustrated when I end up at their site and only get a partial article. - 2015-06-26-16-55-36 - Thanks for the heads up. Pando removed. For exluding certain sites there is the custom area: http://skimfeed.com/custom.php. For everything else, drop feedback and it'll get fixed/removed for everyone. 23 Love it but what's with all the CNET deals junk - 2015-06-25-19-31-27 - Agree. I implemented a simple admin level moderation system to remove clickbait and junk in emergencies, but there's no way every link can be checked every time. Needs a scalable user moderation solution, with no login, that just works. It's a hard problem, but I'm passively looking. 22 v1 please, YOU GOTTA ROLL BACK - 2015-06-25-16-58-18 - EVERYTHING FROM V1 IS IN V3! 21abc Requests for feed inclusion x3 - Done 20 Why do I sometimes (c)(c) next to a link for the comments and sometimes a nice little orange comment image next to links? - 2015-06-24-02-55-11 - Feature! If all the comments links are made orange it gets a little funky fresh and overwhelming. Also, the double (c)(c) is easier to click for mobile users. 19.1 white background is blinding - 2015-06-23-17-26-12 19.2 Arghh my eyesss!!! It burns!!! What happened to the dark theme? - 2015-06-23-21-08-50 - Agreed, the white theme is too bright. I tried a light gray and it just doesn't work. So the cleanest, simplest, design is unfortunately pure brilliant eye-watering white. A good time to lock in your favorite theme under theme settings! 18 Add WEBSITE HERE to tech or science pretty please - 2015-06-23-16-06-10 - Done! 17 Love how your site develops. Putting the links to the hacker news discussion on the right side was helpful for mobile. Maybe just margin it a little to the right? Still sometimes hard to click since so close to the link. - 2015-06-21-07-52-05 - I've had this problem too! Made the icon a little bigger which should improve things. Still using that janky speech bubble though :D - Scratch that, removed icon and replaced with text, which makes the problem worse, but better. - Aaaaand scratch that too, mixed it up a little, text on latest and popular, speech bubble on regular Hacker News box. Used 2 copyright symbols which look ok and big enough for a thumb press on mobile. 16 Theme for girls please - 2015-06-15-12-32-02 - Added a candy theme for low test users. 15 When reviewing the website on a mobile device, it is not possible to read long headlines because they are truncated. - 2015-06-14-07-30-39 - SOLUTION: Click the POPULAR title linke to go to the pop page: http://skimfeed.com/techpop.html, which shows full headlines. 14 V3 doesn't suffice, not at all. it defaults to black, it defaults to having the options SHOWN each time. WHAT THE FU MAN CHU? - 2015-06-09-16-53-34 - I'm guessing you have cookies disabled, cookies blocked, or are using private browsing, which does not save cookies. Cookies are fundamental to the fnuctioning of the site, since V2, and the internet since 1994. When you select options, like theme, or to hide the options box, your choice needs to be saved on your computer (client-side), or the servers (server-side). But Skimfeed has no login system, so it'll have to be your computer. But that doesn't work if you're using private browsing or blocking cookies. What do? If you have a solution, let me know. 13 Roll back to V1 please. or provide skimfeed.com/v1 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - 2015-06-09-16-53-03 - What specifically would you like from V1 that's missing? 12 Hi, how can I go about submitting my blog? LINK HERE 2015-06-08-23-43-20 - Hi, I checked the link included, the article content is good, but if it was added there would be a flood of complaints shouting SPAM SPAM! because of the article title structure used, but that works well for share sites. Sorry! 11 boing boing where did it go? - 2015-06-05-20-48-48 Boing Boing was moved to the random category after users complained it wasn't tech news and had clickbaity titles and sparse content under the link. 10 Hello, I want to discuss co-operation - 2015-06-03-07-01-36 - Please include your proposition in the feedback box. If its interesting, well be in touch. 9 Do you have an integration ability (API..etc) for skimfeed? - 2015-05-31-11-47-09 - For Output API, its sadly a no go. Reason - The Skimfeed algorithms take user behaviour into account when creating the popular box content, without users using the site directly the popular box would be empty. So Output API is a no go. - For Input API if youd like to suggest a feed, please use the suggestions/feedback box. Feeds are checked for quality before adding to the database and assigned a type classification automatically. Once added to the database they will also appear for use in the custom page area. 8 why is boingboing in tech? - 2015-05-30-12-02-49 - It was a trial, but yeah, it is kinda clickbaity/shareable filler. Moved to random page. 7 please stop changing the font-size :( - 2015-05-28-07-42-39 - Just testing! All done now. 6 Let me adjust text size (default = too large), and headline length (default = too short) - 2015-05-28-04-29-08 - Text size changing using a slider is definitely possible, but I think would be useless without the headline length changing to fit the boxes. And the headline titles are cut on the backend, not client side to maintain site load speed. The best solution would be to use a smaller font as the default, and extend the title lengths on the backend. Testing now. - Tested. 11px font size (default is 12px) gives 5 extra characters of length on a title. Sadly, not enough to be meaningful! 5 Please bring back the tooltips. It was the only way to see the full title without clicking the link. - It looks to be working on my side...refresh page and confirm pls! 4 Roll back to V1 please - V3 contains the latest block on the main pages, which was the big missing piece after the database change of V2. That should satisfice. 3 On the dark theme, the comments link looks weird. - Must be a feature :D 2 I have been a huge fan of this website for years. Although recently I noticed that the ( relatively new ) custom newsfeed feature is no longer working. Is this by design? Can you implement another page that simply lists all possible news sources so I can check them manually? Any rate, I will continue to use this site, many thanks.. - Fixed. 1 The custom news option throws a 404 error. - Fixed.
