It's gonna get cold here again in NE Ohio. Maybe time to experiment with bubbles (via Kottke). posted by kathrynm (12 comments total) 23 users marked this as a favorite

I love the way the crystals swirl around as they form.

I lived in Minnesota for 3 winters (that's how you measure time spent there). The first winter I was there, there was a week in January where the daily high temperatures didn't break -10 degrees F. Any residual moisture in the air fell out as ice crystals that sparkled in the clear blue sky. I regret not doing this when I had the chance.

This is cool (literally!). I'd like to try this because I live in Edmonton where most of the days in the last month have been less than -20 deg C. I followed the links but didn't see any specific instructions. Can I assume you just blow normal bubbles using bubble mix and then watch what happens?

If you are (or know) a smoker, you can fill these soap bubbles with smoke. Don't inhale, just hold the smoke in your mouth and then blow the bubble. They freeze in mid-air, smoke still swirling within, and then they crash or explode like little bombs.

Today was brought to you by the word 'dendrite'.

If you add glycerin to the bubble soap they last longer. Also do it on a day without wind.

I have had some fun doing manual 3D printing using water in a squirt bottle on very cold days.

Hello fellow NE Ohioan! Thanks for sharing this fun way to enjoy/tolerate/endure our long winter.

It was -17 here this morning, so I gave this a try. I used this recipe for bubbles.

And it worked!! This isn't hard and just my phone and amateur videography skills captured some pretty neat images.
