Cmdr. John Fage, a spokesman for the 3rd Fleet, said the USS Nimitz is bringing many of its sailors aboard the ship to reduce their chance of being exposed to the virus as well as to more easily monitor their health for potential coronavirus symptoms.

Y
es, by all means, lets bring those sailors back on board a ship we know to have an outbreak of Covid 19.

Ship's propaganda was The Final Countdown, Tora Tora Tora, and 9/11 footage on a continuous loop back in 2005. So...movies from the future would have been an improvement, yes.

Midway had the potential to be a good film.  If they had stuck purely to historical persons and events, it would probably be up there with films like Tora! Tora! Tora! and A Bridge Too Far.

Throwing in that completely unnecessary star-crossed lover plot with the pilot in love with a Japanese woman and her parents being interred simple ruins the film.   And it's largely ahistorical, too:  mass internment of Japanese-Americans didn't happen in Hawaii.

If you're going to make a film about the battle of Midway, then make it about the battle.  If you're going to make a film about Japanese-American internment during WWII, make the film about that.  Mixing the two was an exceptionally stupid idea.

I mean, would A Bridge Too Far been as effective a film if there was a fictional sub-plot about the parents of Robert Redford's Jewish girlfriend being held in a Nazi concentration camp, and him attempting to rescue them?

Of course not.  That would be completely stupid.  Pearl Harbor levels of stupid, and completely unnecessary in telling the story of Operation Market Garden.

Midwaysuffers because of that subplot.

Here's the thing about modern warfare and carriers. They're not valuable. Modern carriers don't have armor and are easily sunk by submarines. They're purely for show and would be completely useless against an adversary like China or even Russia. One thing I learned during battle control drill was to get ready to kiss my ass goodbye if we were ever attacked.

Well, no and yes.  I was on the Carl Vinson back when the Lincoln went into service.  The Lincoln had a deeper draft due to kevlar armor at the waterline and downward.  All subsequent carriers were to be outfitted with kevlar and the then-current carriers would be refitted during overhauls.

I can assure you I'm absolutely not gloating, because no one in their right mind would be.  I'm actually mildly concerned what happens when a country's military begins falling apart due to attrition, what it might cause the nation to do, and what are the consequences to every other country around it.

Sorry if it came off as personally accusatory - didn't mean it that way.
I am just feeling really stubborn and reactionary right now about any attempt to deflect from the sickness that is rotting our own country, and it's body politic.
Underestimating other nation's military capabilities is a form of American arrogance that has gotten us in deep shiat before.

??????

It's working as designed.   Just because you don't like who is in charge doesn't mean it's rotting.   It just means you don't like who is in charge.

I mean, you're not one of those third standard deviation wackos who think that Trump is going to declare himself president for life and suspend elections, are you?   I certainly hope not.  While we may not always see eye-to-eye, you don't impress me as that type.

We've got an election coming up in a few months, and then at the very *WORST*, you've only got a bit over 4 more years to endure.   It'll go much easier on you if every so often you stop, take a deep breath, step away from the cable news channels and political websites for a bit, and just carry on with your life instead of being perpetually enraged and outraged by what you know who who is doing all the time.

At the time of Peal Harbour carriers were still a bit "new" and Naval Doctrine still didn't quite know what to do with them and they tended to be used as forward spotters. Then the Japanese rocked up with what we now know as a Carrier Group. Elements of their doctrine were somewhat ahead of everyone else.
