Sounds like it's time to start checking to see who has the chubbiest kids, just in case.  That reminds me, I need to make sure I have enough firewood for the burn pit to.  Damn, I need to check and make sure that extra long spit is still working too.

Bootleg: They quarantined a city of 11 million people over 634 cases?

Chinese New Year, I think? A time when a lot of people are traveling so they're trying to curtail that.

Which hasn't worked given they've already expanded the quarantine range.

And a second city, now.  Hopefully it's just an abundance of caution, because the alternative could go viral.

And not in the funny-cat-video way.

On the plus side there is no state like a life long indoctrinating totalitarian police state more prepared to quickly and effectively clamp down on people to end a disease outbreak,

So they got that going for them

Potentially.  It is a 14 day incubation period.  That is a long time to wait to see if anyone new is going to pop positive.  I would imagine its the lengthy incubation period as to why they went to quarantine.

When China reports a bad statistic like this, add 2 zeroes. When they report a good statistic, divide the number by 2. If someone gets caught for stealing or fraud, the amount they stole is actually 10 times what was reported.

In the unlikely case that this is the true total diagnosed, with a 14 day incubation period, you are likely looking at 2 or more orders of magnitude more infections.

The blame game is happening right now and it's only going to get worse. Nobody wants to take a family vacation to a labor camp in the Gobi Desert.

Yeah, there absolutely are. THIS is probably Reason #1 why having a government that doesn't routinely lie to its citizens is a good thing and not something that should be business as usual.

Our government is currently no more reliable or trustworthy than that of China.

That's pretty farking hard to do, unless you're just trying really, really hard.

China has 1.4 billion people and a prison population of 1.5 million. Our prison population is over two million, with another 5 million in community monitoring that have agreed to be sent to prison on a probation or parole office's whim.  In China, the most frequently administered sentence is a 2 year's stay in a labor camp-while such homogenisation does not occur in America, many states are serving average sentence lengths at ten years, with red states nearly doubling sentence severity from 2000 to 2020.  China has a legalistic justice system, but it is no worse than the United States, and arguably more merciful towards its petty criminals than the United States... at least when it comes to re-entry on virtue of incarceration length alone.

backhand.slap.of.reason: China has 1.4 billion people and a prison population of 1.5 million.

Remember to multiply all bad news China admits to by a factor of 100.

They have a prison population of 150 million.

\8 million of these live in Hong Kong
