I'm sure the thousands of people who lost homes, businesses and family members in the fires will agree that reorganization details are far more important than their trifling needs.

He went on to say that PG&E's problems are the result of decades of mismanagement that must be addressed before he will sign off on any proposed settlement.

So basically, never.

Yes, it's far more important to most of us for PG&E to figure out a way to provide power without setting MORE fires and killing MORE people.

That's what's important to all of us who haven't (YET, it was close) been burned out of our homes and/or killed.

We'd kinda like to receive power on a steady, reliable basis like most first-world countries without having to be evac'd and wait to find out if our entire lives have been destroyed. You know, like how most people in first-world countries can flip a switch and have a light come on?...Well, that's not always the case here, thanks to PG&E. And now they think they can make a limited settlement with only the people they've severely harmed and not consider the rest of us in this state...

NO.

Thank you, Newsome. Hold these bastards' feet to the fire, literally, until they can function like a proper utility company or they can get the fu*k out of CA and we have a new utility established. Fu*k PG&E!

The governor's right on this: you can't leave PG+E surviving using junk bonds, they have to be financially viable going forward or next time they go under and nobody gets anything.  The settlement basically kills the golden goose as a going concern.

I've seen a lot of Californians defending their planned power-outages, trying to convince themselves that isn't some 3rd-world shiat.  It's... sadly amusing?

I spent 30 years working as the IT/computer administrator guy for a public interest law firm in DC that had, as its major adversary, PG&E.  PG&E is a greedy company, perhaps the equal of Niagara Mohawk and the Southern Companies in terms of being self-serving take what you can, all the traffic will bear s...t companies.  Interestingly, one of the major aims of the public power industry (which we represented) is to nationalize the transmission lines (like the public highways) and therefore separate transmission from generation in the power industry.  Transmission lines are by their nature a monopoly, you don't want one competing with another as you only need one.  But you do need for the profit to be taken out of the transmission function so that public safety is protected.

Generation then can exist in a competitive market, which is mostly a good thing (as long as you include all the pollution externalities in the cost or price function.  DWGP.com if you are interested.

They'ye are doing good things to address climate change. I propose even more regular extended power outages in CA to help even more with it. Include every single square inch of it with rotating areas taking turns going dark.

I love CA and the West Coast in general, but it is definitely becoming a little too dystopian. This picture should be from a movie, not real life:

Combine that with the power outages and an abundance of people sick and dying on the streets, it does paint a bleak picture about our future and about what we as a society are willing to tolerate.

It's time to play "California or Venezuela"

First question is worth $100
In 2019, crumbling infrastructure and poor maintenance caused them to institute power rationing and rolling blackouts that would affect large portions of their population for up to 12 hours a day.

Very low pay for the few people who exist there.
If there's anybody left who wants to get out, come to West Virginia or Mississippi.

Seize the facilities.  Invalidate all shares.  Fire everyone making over the median salary.  Burn the HQ to the ground.  Imprison and bankrupt any VP and above executives, and all board members who ever served, took a dime, or put the title on their resume.

You wanna scream "OMG SOCIALISM!", anti-progress assholes and NYC bankers who championed "but private industry is more efficient!!"  Fine.  If you're gonna be greedy, selfish, sociopath assholes anyway, let's stop dicking around and have some _real_ socialism.

Thanks for the $100 rebate offer-that-wasn't-an-offer, though.  That might cover some of the ice I bought.  After spending 10x++ that on inverters, coolers, and more.

Assholes.

Except it wouldn't be California at the state level; it would be those cities who rely on PG&E for their electricity.

Lots of states have Rural Electric Co-ops (RECC) and they work out pretty well.  Granted, they don't have the challenges of California (terrain, weather) but they have issues of their own.  At least with an RECC, you tend to know - or know someone that knows - the folks running it, and word travels fast when there are problems.

I'm wondering why the CEO and Board haven't been sacked yet and replaced with folks who have no financial interest in PG&E.

Fu*k PG&E!

Your compassion for the people already farked over is noteworthy. I'm sure you'll exhibit comparable patience and understanding when your life is upside down.

I'm one of almost a million Californians who spend nearly 1/3 of October without power, mainly because PG&E has done such a sh*t job of maintaining their equipment that we can't have windy days without their power lines burning down large parts of the state anymore. If you think any of that is remotely acceptable, then you need to apply for a job with PG&E.

Also, FTFA: The proposed settlement agreed to last week by the utility and attorneys representing fire victims would have paid $6.75 billion to the victims in installments ending in early 2022, and $6.75 billion in company stock that would give them close to a 21% stake in the reorganized PG&E.
The settlement also required significant concessions from the victims. Their lawyers had been contending victims were owed at least $36 billion and were likely to seek even larger amounts had they pursued their claims in a state trial and federal court hearing that had been scheduled for early next year.

American-Irish eyes:California running the utility will turn out just like California building the bullet train.

The only significant operational problems so far have been a) a change in control of the federal government to one who refuses to fund government-owned transportation systems, and b) delayed right-of-way acquisition mostly, due to lawsuits. The first four construction packages all went out to bid below estimated cost, and none has yet exceeded its initially planned contingency funding. (CP1 probably will in the end because of the delays from right-of-way acquisition, but at levels in line with typical major construction projects.)

75% of the cost escalation is due to a) local accommodation to avert lawsuits, b) inflation to later year-of-construction dollars from having to spread the plan over more years from having to rely more on cap-and-trade revenue.

The latter is, of course, not a real cost escalation, because government revenues will have escalated by an equivalent amount. (I mean, unless you're the kind of person who freaks out about how, say, cars cost twice as much as they did in 1990 - in which case I don't feel bad disregarding your opinion entirely).

American-Irish eyes: LordJiro: How about make the farkers pay and completely socialize the utilities? Not only should basic shiat like electricity not be privatized in the first place, but the "free market", at least in PG&E's case, has clearly, and repeatedly, shown that it cannot handle the responsibility.

California running the utility will turn out just like California building the bullet train.

There are NUMEROUS publicly-owned utilities around the country and virtually every one of them provides reliable electric power at about 1/3 less cost than the private utilities.  There are many examples in California alone:  Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Redding, SMUD, Modesto Irrigation District, Transmission Agency of Northern California, etc. etc. etc.  You don't know what you are talking about.

silvervial: edmo: I'm sure the thousands of people who lost homes, businesses and family members in the fires will agree that reorganization details are far more important than their trifling needs.

Fu*k PG&E!

Begoggle: Liberal paradise HAHAHAHA
California is a wasteland and nobody lives there.
No jobs.
Very low pay for the few people who exist there.
If there's anybody left who wants to get out, come to West Virginia or Mississippi.

oh no

I can never remember, are the liberals in California blaming Global Warming, PG and E, or Trump this week for the forest fires?
