(NPR)   So just how did the phrase "Gung Ho" come to mean an over-eager individual taking on perhaps a little too much for his ability? NPR asks the question. Subby would have just asked Ron Howard and Michael Keaton   (npr.org) divider line

Maybe you're a college freshman, emailing all of your professors before the semester starts to tell them how absolutely thrilled you are to be in their class.

Umm, is that a thing?

Hard to believe there was a time when United States Marines would proudly associate themselves with communist philosophy and dogma in one of their most elite unites, to now when...well probably not better to dwell on that.

It morphed from the original "gang ho", meaning a whore that would gladly take on the entire gang at one time even if it was too much for her.

He's not exaggerating about every new thing. According to Christopher Blaker, a historian and editor with the U.S. Marine Corps History Division, "Their long combat knives were called 'Gung Ho' knives, their hunting jackets were christened 'Gung Ho' jackets, and meetings in the field became 'Gung Ho' meetings. They even named their camp on the island of Espiritu Santo 'Camp Gung Ho.' "

I'm wondering how much of that was actually in earnest, and how much of that was the rank-and-file Marines being ironic assholes.

Yes, they are water tight.  And you can buy a watch in Switzerland, the Pope does wear a tall hat, and a bear does indeed defecate in the woods.

According to my father (a native Cantonese speaker), it means "Let's farm!" Whether that's Mandarin/Cantonese transliteration or my pop was just pulling my leg, I don't know. Sadly he's no longer around to ask.

You don't have to be smart to be an ironic asshole.  You just have to be an asshole, ironically.
