Did Mom put her handicapped parking placard up so everyone knew she was cool to use a handicapped parking space?

If not, Mom shouldn't complain.

If Mom did, the note's author needs to get their eyes checked.

Taking handicapped parking from disabled people is a personal pet peeve. When I take my wheelchair bound sister out, I don't park in handicapped parking places because I'm visiting from another state and don't have a placard. But I'm in good shape and can get her wheelchair out to get her loaded up for shopping, movies and restaurants.

Sister in law has lupus really bad, plus steel rods in her back and legs.  She got confronted by some guys in a pickup from a construction company who were parked in a spot. She asked them where their placard was at (the three appeared to be mid 20's) and they proceeded to start following her around the lot tailgating her. She called the local police and the assholes finally quit tailgating when they saw two cop cars enter the lot. Even sadder, cops didn't stop them and she had gotten the company name and truck number. Called the company up and they acted like it was no big deal.

I thought this was going to be about the usual jackass who parks in these spaces because they couldn't be bothered to honor their purpose, even when facing a fine and towing.  But no, it's another kind of jackass who's equally annoying and oblivious.  Go figure.

This also transfers to public transportation. There's seats up front saying to please let disabled people/elderly use them but half the time, despite my disabled pass (you can hear the computer say "please show ID"), I'm left with a very painful, unpleasant riding experience.

Everyone from mothers with a baby in carrier (fairly understandable), to a skate punk with a long board, glaring at you for not wanting to be thrown around and deal with shocks in the ankles and feet..

Well, as myself and a friend observed the other day, most people just aren't very observant at all, living their lives in a semi-aware daze, shuffling around on autopilot.. mostly with their heads up their asses.

Sad, but true..

I don't always need my cane. I often have a knee brace on, which fits under my pants. Doesn't mean I'm healthy, doesn't mean I'm not hurting, just means you can't see my disability. If I had a dollar for every time I caught sh*t from some Handicap Space Savior because I didn't meet their definition of someone who needs it over the last 20-something years, I would be a rich ma-- well no, I would have wasted all the money, on Legos or something but you get my point.

Huh, that's weird. I ride public transportation and I can't remember a time when other riders have failed to give up their front-of-the-bus seats to the elderly/disabled/pregnant. Around here, a person is liable to be publicly shamed if they're so selfish.

I think the person who left the note didn't see her tiny disabled sticker/sign or whatever. Normally it should be at the back of the car, correct? The note really sounded like it was more aimed towards a person who parked without having a disabled sign.

Then the lady who got the note thought it was gonna make for some awesome Facebook post to earn a bunch of internet points.

I'm not sure on all 50 states, but in my state, it is a placard placed on the dash or rear view mirror. The placard is "free" with your disability, and I would assume license plates would be an extra cost in my state. Not sure, but considering I only see life long disability people with them, and 98% just the card, I might be right. The placard also is tied to an ID to be legal. It is not bound to the vehicle, but the person. That way if they aren't the ones driving, they can access those parking spaces.

People also forget that you, the vehicle owner, do not have to be the disabled one in order to legally  display a handicapped parking placard. Directly from the MA RMV: "You can use the placard in any vehicle in which the person with a disability is being transported." So yes, the mother is not disabled, but she can still legally display the placard and park in the spot because she's transporting someone who is disabled (her daughter).

You are correct, at least for my state (MA):

Placards are free.
License plates:
-Passenger vehicle: $60 for 2 years.
-Motorcycle: $20 for 1 year.
-Disabled veteran license plates are free.

Not all disabilities are obvious ones either. If the state considers someone disabled enough to issue them a handicapped parking placard it's not up to passers-by to second-guess, just because the disabled person may not be in a wheelchair.

Sort of related CSB: there's visitor parking next to the lobby of my apartment building, and once the leasing office closes people can park there overnight.  Each apartment comes with some assigned parking and you can pay for additional assigned spaces, but plenty of people are too cheap for that and instead park in the visitor parking.  That in itself is irritating because it means there's no parking for genuine visitors, but I digress.  Unsurprisingly there's also a handicapped spot there.  Some overcompensating assclown in a big blinged-out lifted Jeep started parking there regularly.  He (I'm making an assumption about gender here, but I don't think it's an unreasonable one) had no handicapped placard and no handicapped plates.  He just saw an open spot and took it because fark you that's why.  Did I write passive-aggressive notes and leave them on his windshield?  No, I took photos and submitted them to the local PD (there's an app for that) every time I saw him parked there.  I only had to do that four or five times, and I haven't seen him parked there since.

That reminds me of a guy I used to work with who was in his mid-20s.  He'd semi-regularly visit strip clubs, and one time he got waaaay too drunk.  He went out to drive home, realized how drunk he was while trying to back out of his parking space, and put it right back, sort of.  He took a taxi home and the next day when he came to retrieve his car, which was parked across like 4 spaces, he found a helpful note on his windshield saying "If you're too drunk to park it you're too drunk to drive it."  I'm not sure what that note-leaver was thinking given that he found the car parked at the strip club, meaning that it hadn't been driven home, but w/e.

After my botched spinal operation, I couldn't run if you put a gun to my head, My Wifes car was broken in to, and all they stole was my handicap placard. I'm getting another, but now being permanently disabled, I can walk long distances, but it's really taxing. Someone really needs to grow a pair, when I was attending the Anderson School of management, the parking cop told me I had my placard on the wrong way. Write me a ticket, then. Huh, I thought not.

the mrs. doesnt get around too well, and she has had some surgery, so we have hanging placards in both her car as well as mine.  when we fly somewhere, we take one of them and use it on the rental car.  works like a charm.  what i really hate the most, and it says right on the damn thing, remove from mirror while driving the vehicle.  i cant begin to tell you how many people i see driving around with this hanging on the mirror--does the term blind spot mean anything?  apparently not.

i keep them off the mirror unless we are parked.  and i dont use it if she is not with me, nor if i am dashing into a store for her and she wants to wait in the car.

CSS Time -
My grandmother is 93 years old.  Two weeks ago, I took her shopping and parked in the ADA spot and put the placard on my mirror.  I jumped out of the driver side of my car and some woman rolled down her window and yelled "you inconsiderate biatch!  There are people that NEED these parking spots."  I just smiled and waved and then proceeded to hoist Grandma's wheelchair out of the trunk and take it to the passenger side of the car while the woman sat there watching me.
Once inside the store, Grandma realized that she left her purse in the car - this was my fault because I got distracted - so I left her to look at stuff and ran out to get it.  When I was getting her purse, a man confronted me and told me that I should burn in hell for taking that parking spot when there were people with real problems and veterans that could park there.  I told him that I would keep that in mind.
He followed me inside griping the entire time.  I walked over to where Grandma was shopping and handed her purse and started to push her around and he started to say something.  I flat out told him that he would not say anything because if anyone deserved front row parking, it was my grandmother.  He walked away.

So yeah, people are bastards about those parking spots.  The nasty note does not surprise me at all.
