How much catnip do they have to farm to pay for the upkeep?

So why does Unrinji have such a soft spot for cats?
According to legend, several centuries ago a prominent samurai who lived in the area passed away. The samurai's beloved pet cat was so distraught by the loss of its owner that it sat by the samurai's grave for 49 days until, overcome with grief, it bit down on its own tongue and followed the samurai into the afterlife.

That's some anime Hemingway shiat right there, man

I can tell that no cat has ever gone into that temple, because they would have knocked off all the decorations to the ground.

Going to Hagi next month. I might check this place out if the weather's bad.

There are several temples in my house dedicated to my cats.

There are the scratching post temples, which they partake of vigorously, and then there are the Natuzzi leather couches in kidskin which they also partake of enthusiastically.  Can't blame them.  It looks like it feels great to tuck your claws into genuine Italian leather.

Then there is the playtime area, where my latest arrival sings "String Time for Hitler" until I untwine him with catnip and he disassembles my Lane chest from both sides while we enjoy pretending that daddy has prey for frigging Baby Huey.

And then there are the litter boxes.

The litter boxes.

Sonofabiatch, I've been to Hagi! I'd have loved to have gone there had I known of its existence.

Cat Island is first on my list, though.

I'm all for the temple. I'm only quibbling about it being "overlooked", as it's in a far corner of Honshu somewhere between Hiroshima and Kyushu.

All that being said, we have living proof right here in this thread live in real time that the article is dead right about it being "overlooked" if you ARE in that corner of Japan thanks to aagrajag who actually HAD been to Hagi and DID overlook it.

Followed your link about Cat Island, and came across this "only in Japan" item:

In 2018, Ehime Shimbun reported that the population had decreased to 13 with an average age of "over 75".[1] The island attracts tourists who visit the cats and give them food.[4]

"With an average age of 75" Average age of 75? Only in Japan.

/Well, maybe some old folks homes in Florida, but that's cherry picking.

That's how it is here, man. In fact, I now live in one of the most rapidly-aging prefectures in the country. I think it's soon gonna be to time to move.

I loved seeing these boards, saw quite a few at some Tokyo temples back when I visited Japan in 2015.

You did get some English messages there (among quite a few other languages too). My favourite that stuck with me was: "On your travels, may the road rise up to meet you".

I thought the road rose up to meet me once, but it turned out I'd just drunk too much cheap shouchuu and faceplanted.

Ah. Well, then.

I have a male cat with his 金玉 intact, so I can enjoy the real deal. They're kind of brown-and-yellow-striped and resemble fuzzy bees, so my wife calls them "bumbleballs".

Already got a fair amount of it. About 4 or 5 different ones I use for Shochu. My goal this time is a Hagi-yaki Tokkuri, I think.
I love the way the thick lacquer cracks. It's like you buy a piece, then finish it off yourself over generations.
