In the spring of 2018, I visited the offices of the millennial/Gen-Z-oriented website babe.net, a sunny loft space in Williamsburg, just around the corner from Vice. Babe.net - now shuttered - was then at the frothy peak of its existence. I made sure to wear my coolest pants.

The site's managing editor, Eleni Mitzali, a 24-year-old blonde with a sharp bob and half-a-dozen tiny earrings who told me she only listened to podcasts about business strategy and murder, offered me a doughnut while I waited for the day to start.

Yup, I was right. I don't want to know anymore, and now actively want to kill all involved (including myself).

I skimmed it. Does that count? It didn't get better, never got out of "who cares? Not just who cares, but why would ANYONE care about this?" territory.

This is what happens when websites think that what happens to other websites is actually worth talking about because they themselves don't have anything better to say either. It's cannibalistic. All of these people, the original website and anyone who decided what happened there was important enough to write a story about, are living in a fake world with zero perspective on anything.

Please, someone tell me that there are at least a few people in their 20s who don't tell their own story in the passive voice, as if they have no agency.   I think, I hope, there are lots of them, but they sure are under-represented in the media.

It means a flaming turd sandwich of a clickbait-mill started to go down the dumps, but one of its 20-something offshoot subdomains that preys on naive children to provide "crowdsourced" content for free started getting more clicks, so all the focus moved there and someone finally shelled out for the babe.net domain.

Begoggle: TLDR; A bunch of kids managed to scam Rupert Murdoch (and other investors) out of a bunch of money, to sit around and get drunk and write dumb stories.

It wasn't a bunch of kids that scammed Murdoch. It was a sloppy British white guy at 19, proving, for the zillionth time, that white mediocrities get ahead on bullshiat everlasting. This Rivkin guy, whatever his name was, founded the site to get he and his buddies laid. The actual staff were young women, often misguided or whatever, who were trying to do something but had no editorial guidance whatsoever. At the base of this was a bunch of slick whiteboi slobs, like always.

Good news everyone, I read the article in its entirety.

I did this mostly because I wanted to know why people were using their real names and pictures until I realized this is some kind of ad/begging for work effort by a bunch of unemployed millenials and I have to interview something like 100 people just like them them for several dozen positions very soon.

Basically the story is that a business based on a 2009 squatted site (babe.net) was built by a clickbait aggregator (The Tab) to get clicks from the 18-24 female demographic, and the employees kinda did achieve that goal when they weren't getting drunk and/or banging each other, until they did a piece on Aziz Ansari that epitomized the line between a bad date and nonconsentual behavior and then they got their 15 minutes of fame. Then the universe realized it wasn't a business, it was basically a bunch of college kids with no plan or even an HR department and the money dried up.  The end.

So this was basically the story of a website that pushed #metoo too far. A website that was supposedly for young women but was really the living fantasy of the 2-3 guys who directed the women and pushed them, ultimately, into projects that were too nihilistic even for "girls who don't give a fark."

Really this whome article was worthless. Rebellion for the sake of rebellion basically just gets you manipulated by others. Too bad the writer didn't have the guts to actually point it out.

I read it as a group of young people working together in a business run by other young people and everyone is so happy that they found a place where they belong. Then reality set in, the ones lower in the food chain saw that the ones higher on the food chain didn't care about them...even though they all party together! So they complained, got ignored, and quit. All this time the business wasn't making money anyways but it was dependent on attracting investors. Once they could no longer pull in enough investment money the whole thing crashed.

The sex, involvement of the internet, and #metoo stuff was incidental. A business run like that would have the same problems even if all they did was install carpet.

I'm going to guess: Young people being too stupid to realize and not being professional enough to realize that work is where you earn a paycheck not a f##kbuddy. Then they proceed to make stupid decisions worse by continuing stupid behavior until the whole thing blows up like a college romance fueled by alcohol induced stupidity.

Babe launched in 2016 as a vertical of Tab Media, the brainchild of a 29-year-old British journalist named Jack Rivlin. He'd started the site in 2009 while still a 19-year-old student at Cambridge.

Further proof here that Tabs Ruin Everything.

It was.  It even led to some useful discussion about communication and consent.  The story was a mess and horribly handled, but it added something useful to the #metoo movement.

Still, I'm not at all surprised about what happened to the site.
