Hmmmmm, why not try setting up a homestead 14 nautical miles off the coast of the USA?  I'm sure you wouldn't be boarded.  At the least you would be considered a hazard to navigation.

Thailand is claiming 200 NM.  Even if that weren't a factor, where were they getting supplies from?  Chances are they were bypassing customs and had made several trips to the mainland.

Even if they were clean and laws don't apply, neither does the protection of law.

Somebody once talked about doing a case study of the game 'Rust', where it basically boiled down to if two people had guns, they kind of stayed away from each other, but if one had a gun and the other didn't it was 'murder them for their stuff' time.

I'm sure it has changed in the years since then but that's how it was for a while.

Yah, 14nm isn't international waters, dipshiat. You could have read the one relevant international convention before you started talking about "legal loopholes."
I love how non-specific the article was with the Thai "partner" too.

The U.S. has observed the Convention as customary international law since the Reagan administration though. The navigation and overflight parts, at least.

I was in the Coast Guard and any vessel without a state flag was open game for boarding. These vessels usually didn't have a "Captain" either, since they were the one facing the stiffest penalty if drugs were found.

International law by treaty states that any occupied man made object such as a boat or an oil rig has to be flagged by a soveriegn nation recognized by the U.N..

If not, legally you are considered a pirate and can be dealt with accordingly by any soveriegn nation.

Including the use of deadly force.

Bearishlyphat: Don't these idiots realize that in a lawless area the biggest gun wins? Sure there are no laws. Then the military comes along sticks a gun in your face and says obey our laws or die.

Well, there is the Law of the Sea.  I think they are counting on that law which gives vessels free passage in international waters.  But

1) are they a vessel?  If not, are they considered flotsam?
2) if they are a vessel, they are still subject to boarding in international waters to determine a number of things including seaworthiness, whether they need help, whether they are pirates, or whether they are misrepresenting their nationality (if they were flying a Thai flag e.g.)
3) as the occupants weren't home (and apparently didn't respond to hails) their "vessel" could reasonably be considered abandoned and should be towed or sunk as a hazard to navigation.  Imagine if thousands of these started popping up in shipping lanes.

But does that flag have a fringe or not? These are important questions to idiots like these.

The seasteaders as they exist today are a bunch of sanctimonious bullshiat artists. Plus they're backed in part by Peter Thiel which should explain a lot. Plus every deep-web wannabe drug-and-rape fiend you could possibly find. The very first successful seasteader will be immediately raided and enslaved, killed, or worse by Somalian pirates.

On the other hand we are apparently using Waterworld, one of the worst Kevin Bacon films of all time, as a manual with our casual disregard of the environment. Bye-bye ice, bye-bye land. All of our descendants will be seasteaders someday.

There's an interesting little troika of questions that I occasionally ask. I rarely have to elaborate on them since people often go to great lengths to avoid answering, or even thinking about them. It is almost like a tribal religious taboo where even "thinking the Name" is punishable by agonizing extended death.

1) What is the correct and complete working definition of "government"?

2) What is the correct and complete working definition of "the State"?

3) What does an entity have to do to qualify as one and/or the other of those?

Perhaps those "fnord" theorists were onto something....
