I've read all the books and seen the movies. I don't recall a Beatrix Potter. Maybe James' mom or sister?

This was over a Peter rabbit coin? What the actual fark?

I'm not a coin collector, but I do have a smattering of ancient greek and roman coins that we cleaned. My kid and I share a love of history, neat to hold something 2000 years old in your hand. /csb

It's not the coins, it's the collection. the more you have of a particular set or series, the more the set is worth as a whole

I'm not a coin collector, but some of the ancient Roman coins would be of interest to me ( esp. ones featuring the Julio-Claudians)

Isn't that just how coins work?

The more coins you have, the more the overall value goes up? 2 quarters are  worth waaaay more than 1 quarter. Like...twice as much.

If the quarters were part of a rare set with a limited mintage, then probably 4 times as much.

Thing to be careful of are the shysters selling 'minting errors' on ebay. 9 times out of ten it's completely normal, like the edge of a £2 coin being minted upside down, there's no such thing.

But when they do, you can bet Tommy Brock was there.

It's a crap shoot what you'll actually get when you buy uncleaned coins, but they're not terribly expensive.  Probably the most valuable we got was a Marcus Aurelius coin from around 170. Most of them aren't really worth anything, I just think it's cool to own a little piece of history.

Last bunch I ordered had a good quality Constantius II from the mid 300s. I'll stop threadjacking now.

There are a lot of sellers on eBay, but, it's eBay so...i usually order from dirty old coins, it costs a bit more but most of what you get will be relatively easy to identify. The eBay sellers you're much more likely to get ones that could just as easily be slugs for all I know, but they're a lot cheaper.

After that it's just soaking in distilled water and gentle scrubbing with a toothbrush.

I had a thing for about a year on collecting Imperial Chinese coins. Unlike western coins - they never depicted anyone and the beauty is the characters and how they were drawn. Tried to get a decent collection for a certain dynasty or two.  Most aren't older than several centuries.  Loved getting a bunch of them, getting some water and scrubbing them with a toothbrush and seeing if there is anything valuable (the vast majority aren't really worth anything more than a few bucks - the Chinese cast these things in seeming quantities like the US mint does pennies).

Very cool.  I didn't know about that. I only collected for historical value (ticking off coins from each emperor).  My wife who is a Hong Konger mentioned a combination of coins which owning all of them is good luck.  I Ching with the coins fits in with all that madness over numerology, superstition and luck.

My parents gave me a Leo the Wise coin from the early 900s about twenty years ago and I haven't been able to find it for a while. It's genuinely painful not knowing where it is -- just hoping it will turn up when I'm cleaning out a closet or something because otherwise, fark. Fortunately I don't think anyone would be willing to kill me over it because nobody cares about Byzantine emperors -- hopefully nobody makes a TV series about them any time soon.
