TFA:  Florida is drowning. Condos are still being built.

Subby doesn't understand that it generally isn't "rich fools" buying condos.  Rich developers might be buying real estate to build condos, but they aren't planning on keeping them for themselves.

In fact, TFA specifically speaks to those who aren't millionaires and advises them to move.  Not that mere millionaires should be considered rich.

Worse, climate change will result in huge super-gators that will proliferate and consume thousands of Floridians daily, until extermination efforts succeed which in turn causes the size of alligator bags and alligator shoes to increase, while the price of alligator bags and shoes concurrently drops to unprecedented levels. If you own stock in any of the major alligator bag and shoe manufacturers, it's time to divest.

A couple years ago, I was visiting people in the Vero Beach area. The barrier islands there are barely a few feet above sea level, but there are all sorts of nice houses and condominium complexes there. You'll see the same all the way up through New Jersey, but often with crappier real estate.

There was an Iain M Banks book set after what the protagonists termed The Jackpot.
This was a catastrophic collapse of the environment, generally, wiping out most the world's population.  However it occurred (somewhat being caused by) a simultaneous massive pickup in technology, leaving the few survivors essentially in a post scarcity paradise.
Not really a fan but I enjoyed the grim comment on our outlook.

Hahahahaha, what a clown. You have to go back to the archives to find anything that talks about anything except warming temperatures. and it goes back a couple of decades. Hey, look at what I found:

Fark user imageView Full Size

Wow, he sounds concerned. But that must be absolute bullshiat--it calls climate change "the greenhouse effect," and we know that term isn't accurate. The earth isn't a dome. Certain places, like north Americda, had a decades-long cooling trend last century. I think we can safely say that "global warming" is complete crap.

Even if that guy got it right in 1979.

There's this thing with science, it uses the data that's available to make predictions about trends. IN  THE 70s, the data indicated that we should be seeing cooling. However, since then, we've not only reversed the cooling, but boosted the global temperature as well. The prediction changed because new data came in. Shocking, I know.

One of the reasons why the super-rich build or buy in Florida is to take advantage of Florida laws which mayke it really hard for creditors to get their hands on real estate. Trump and a lot of other famous bankrupts have a place in Florida as a hedge against creditors. I imagine a lot of this trade would continue to attract big money until the foundations crumble and the super-rich have to find a tax have that is a bit further off shore than the average island or sand bar. In the right direction--inland and uphill.

Oddly enough, Delaware is one of the biggest tax havens and it is no more off-shore than Florida, and most of it is if anything lower that bits of Florida.

However, if you want a global warming proof tax haven, I think you would be hard put to beat Austria or Switzerland. Because they are quite a ways inland and uphill with respect to most of the world's money.

If you want to know the truth of what is real and what is denialism, check with an actuary for an insurance company. They gave up insuring most of Florida years ago, especially the Keys.

Storm surge insurance? They're happy to sell you flood insurance because floods don't do the damage--it's the storm surge during hurricanes. As far as insurance companies are concerned, the first ten or twenty feet of water is free.

Ontario and Quebec get most of their electricity from nuclear power plants and hydroelectric dams or run-of-river turbines. That's why the Electric Company is called Hydro and your electric bill is called Hydro. When Canadians think of electricity, they think of hydro-electric generation, not coal.

That's why people who want to offset their carbon consumption buy electricity from "green" providers. The electricity is fungible, but buying it from a "green" provider means you encourage green production, although the electricity for all the producers travel through the same wires.

In Canada your bills are broken down into several items, for the power itself, the the transmission, and so forth so that companies can compete for your business. But the giant electrical network is shared and owned by a different company from the little picayune power plants and the big producers like the nuclear reactors.  It's a bit "virtual" but it makes economic sense because buying your electricity from Bullfrog, say, encourages investment in better cleaner production without the little producers having to compete directly with the big vested money in the form of the grid or giant producers and giant users who get large discounts on the cost of their electricity compared to small businesses who buy retail or domestic household customers.

Isn't modern economics amazing? They can build towers from the roof down, or sell you the airspace over a cathedral to build in across town where height limits are not restricted. You can even buy carbon offsets so you can fly with a clean conscience if you are rich enough to pay the carbon taxes and surcharges.

Good, because climate change sounds like something you adapt to by wearing a different type of clothing, changing where you live, and using more robust building techniques.

We should be calling this process Planetary Ecosystem Collapse (PEC).  That's accurate and alarming, as it should be.
