Why is that wrong if it's what they believe? You would have to be a giant hypocrite to pretend that the kid is going to heaven while all the Catholic teachings say otherwise. I'm no bible expert, but I don't recall anywhere in it where god says just pick and choose whatever you want to believe if it makes you feel better.

I'm not saying the priest isn't an asshole, but these people are stupid. If they were catholic they'd know suicide is like the #1 sin. Use to be they wouldn't let people who committed suicide be buried in the catholic cemetery.

Against, I'm not saying religion isn't bullshiat, but I'm pretty sure the catholic church has clear there is a bottom on how low someone can go and still get into heavan, and they must ask for forgiveness and repent, neither of which a person can do after killing themselves, so it's a one way ticket to hell in their eyes.

2018-12-15 11:37:42 AM

naughtyrev: Suicide isn't explicitly condemned in the Bible. Hell, Samson killed himself and is considered a hero. Saul wasn't condemned for his, either. Really the only person who potentially was was Judas, and I think there are plenty of reasons that could be viewed as a condemnation of the man versus the act.

Jesus purposely avoided not dying, instead choosing suicide by cop.  Is suicide by cop OK with this priest?

Have you read the Bible? It's full of contradictions, beginning at the very start:

Gen1-2:4 is completely different from Gen2:5ff.

Jesus says in Mark and Luke, "anyone who divorces his wife commits adultery." But Matthew gives him an extra-added caveat, "...except for marital unfaithfulness."

Exodus 20: Do not covet your neighbor's wife" (I can covet my neighbors husband) AND Do not commit adultery (polygamy and concubines are great)

Exodus 20: Is it do not murder, or do not kill? (Killing is not identical to murder; Also, capital punishment and slaughtering the Amalekites is fine.)

The Catholic Church views it as self murder, so if you mortality wound yourself and beg for forgiveness before you die, you get heaven, you kill yourself instantly, you get hell. It's a common view in religious communities that mental illness is not a psychological problem but a spiritual problem.

Which is a completely ridiculous interpretation. All of the commandments are prohibitions against doing something to somebody else.  If somebody insists that suicide is self murder then I will tell them that charity is sinning because depriving yourself of money and getting nothing in return is self theft.

CSB: My great-great-granduncle was a preacher in a fishing community ("Harboøre") on the west coast of Denmark. The North Sea is not a user-friendly ocean, and one specific storm claimed the lives of 26 fishermen. He gave a funeral sermon with fire and brimstone as was his way, and a visiting journalist from Copenhagen ran with the story, embellishing it a bit along the way. The story set off a bit of a national schism, leading to the West Jutland  communities finding their own cultural identity, starting their own newspapers etc. - and earned my sort-of-ancestor the moniker "The Harboøre Hell-preacher".

The best way to tell for certain os to set a little boy down near them and see which end they go for.

That hasn't been true since the 1960s. They updated the cathecism to take a softer view as depression and mental illness became more understood this guy was way out of line with the modern church teachings.

1) Perhaps the parents aren't overlooking how their son died. Maybe they wanted to celebrate the short life they had with their son.
2) Picking and choosing (and self-interpreting) out of the Bible is how all believers live their lives.
3) The preacher was a piece of schitt.

Suicide was not a sin in early Christianity. That was a doctrine of Augustine, struggling to reconcile the conflicting messages of the Old and New Testaments.

In the early Church, the number of martyrs who killed themselves rather than submit to conversion to paganism was getting out of hand, and if Earth was hell and Paradise awaited then there was no reason not to end one's life; so Augustine and other Church fathers put forward the idea that self-murder was the gravest of sins, a betrayal of god.

It simply doesn't exist outside that context.

"In addition, he has agreed to pursue the assistance he needs in order to become a more effective minister in these difficult situations."

But think of what this incident say about him as a person.  The fact that he would do what he did betrays a lack of empathy so profound that he should find something else to do for a living.

I had a friend commit suicide years ago. He was a real "shady" character. Got busted for bringing a barge of pot up the Mississippi River. He had many friends and among them was a group of bikers. During the funeral, the priest pretty much did the same thing describing him as a bad man and burning in hell. The bikers nearly killed that priest. Fun funeral.
