Wow, we need a modernized term for nanny state because nanny seems far too unrestrictive to describe what is happening on the UK.  And also we probably cant say it on tv anymore.

Many British sitcoms and game shows are far worse than anything ever aired in the US.

Do people really agree with this stuff? It's not like "traditional" gender roles evolved out of thin air.  They're there because they've been incredibly successful.  Oh they're not perfect? What a surprise.

So women wearing a bikini is a stereotypical role?  wtf?  Seriously, what the blimey fluck?  Is that the right way to use "blimey"?

Adverts will no longer be able to show a person failing to achieve a task specifically because of their gender

Like a man trying to breastfeed?

When I was a kid and living in England it wasn't sitcoms that were the problem, it was shows like Dallas and Dynasty (or "Din-a-stee", as they pronounced it).

Read the short story "Harrison Bergeron", by Kurt Vonnegut.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Bergeron

Read the story, don't watch the TV Movie.

Only thing of Vonnegut's I ever actually liked, or even sorta agreed with.

Wanted to post a link to the complete text of the story, but I'm Farking while monitoring a process for work, and the work systems won't let me get that link.  Wonder if that means something?

They'll need to ban American commercials, then, too - they're even worse.

Rules for American TV commercials:

1) All males are completely incompetent at all domestic tasks and require a woman to show them how to do anything right.

2) Only women eat yogurt.

3) All people in dental related product commercials already have perfect, mirror-bright teeth.

4) No fat people allowed in junk food ads.

5) Only sexy people allowed in beer & car commercials.

6) Only buff 1% body people allowed in exercise equipment ads.

etc... basically, advertisers only show people in their commercials that obviously don't use their products and 1950s gender stereotypes.  Unless it's an Apple ad - then it's nothing but hipsters, which is pretty spot on accurate.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have read it though, and think it's a great short story.

Which reminds me, this law should also provide me my own personal ballerina. For reasons.

Just so you know, this is a move by the Advertising Standards Authority which is a private body, independent of government and funded by the advertising industry. It has no powers to penalize.

So, those of you worried about the nanny state, libruls and SJWs, what have you got against private companies setting their own standards?
