I love this story.  There's a delicious inevitable stupidity about the whole affair.  Just an old, rusting bridge and one guy with a truck and zero farks to give.

That's why I live by the philosophy of "don't ask, they'll probably say no."
Always easier to feign ignorance that way too.

"I had no idea I wasn't allowed to dismantle an abandoned bridge. I thought I was helping you guys out, since no one wanted it."

Remember reading an article years ago, city closed down a local scrapyard for all kinds of violations, then lo & behold, car theft, burglary, etc, all dropped by something like 90% in a five mile radius or so within the first month.  Even the local crack dealers had to move out.

Scrapyards are the worst thing to have in any neighborhood.

I recently bought a bridge from this guy I met on the street. I was wondering what to do with it. This guy gave me a great idea. I'll scrap it for cash.

Going to have to put out some traffic cones out to get all the cars off it.

D'yer Mak'er is actually not too bad. It's catchy and singable. Not their best, obviously, but not horrid either. And yeah, pretty much everything on the last album is sub par.

But the crunge is just garbage, and they damn well know it, as it's right there in the lyrics. Where, indeed, is that confounded bridge? You're waiting for it through the whole tuneless, unstructured, "song".

D'yer Mak'r is awesome!  Continuing on with the NW Indiana theme, radio DJ's usually announced it as "Dyer Maker" but once I grew up and recognized the reggae beat I quickly realized the pronunciation should be "Jer  Maker", which is both British for "Did you make her" and the name of the island where reggae originated, Jamaica.

He did the town a service for less than anyone else, those places can be dangerous when left without proper upkeep. I assume whoever is in charge of delegating or auctioning off the scrap job didnt get their bribe and is upset their cousin didnt get the task.

I remember the first time I heard dyer maker, it was a shiatty copy and had a few riffs from dancing days in the intro before the breakdown and lyrics came in, and it WORKED musically, I still have a copy somewhere, but for a few years I swore it was how it went because the error just flowed smoothly then skipped back into dyer maker.....
