Reviewing records between February 2011 and September 2020, investigators determined the Assistant General Superintendent owed $9,000 in tolls and $92,000 in fines to three separate tolling agencies.

We're gonna boot you
Not worried, I'll get another car.
It's not your car that's getting the boot.

They demoted him.... And let him pay only $10k.... So $92k in penalties becomes $1k, as $9k was the original tolls.

I suspect most other people wouldn't get such a great deal

"the employee received a demotion to his previous title of Superintendent, a 12-week suspension between May and August without pay, and a settlement order to pay $10,000 in restitution"

I'm assuming the dumbass tag is for the MTA because the employee got away with it.

And, thanks to the old-boys network at the MTA, all he got was a one-grade demotion and he had to pay the tolls but not the fines. If Joe Average Driver had done this, the MTA would end up owning Joe Average Drivers house after he had to sell it to pay the fines.

I mean, seriously?

Do bus drivers pay to ride the bus? Fark no, they get on and commute to work.
Do pilots and flight attendants pay for plane tickets? Fark no, they get on and commute to work.

Transit employees ought to get a free pass anywhere they go in the system. It's deadheading to work.

I mean, this guy probably could have ridden the bus to work for free. Which makes him even dumber for driving his car over toll bridges and then bragging about it...

You might want to check the used car market... https://www.kbb.com/car-news/average-used-car-price-sets-another-record/

If it has gas and starts it's probably worth $2k.

Seriously though, $900 a year is only like $3 a day. Driving over one bridge in NYC is like... $15, maybe discounted to $6.55 if you have EZ-pass.

I've heard that there's a maximum you can be backfined at once.  I'm sure that it was a city law. So maybe they got that there.

That "cloudy thing" he had on his license plate is called a Fresnel lens plate cover.
I have one on my vehicle, front and back.  Not to avoid tolls (I have a pike pass).
From STRAIGHT behind or in front, you can read the license plate clearly.  If you
are trying to view from an angle, or from above, it is wiped out and you can't see it.
Why? Because I can.

I work for the city, I still have to pay tolls.

Additionally, IIRC MTA employees do get free public transit.

A lot of people, especially if they cross a bridge on their daily commute.  A $5 bridge toll will do it.

Yup. I have had a pickup that 6 months ago was worth right at what I bought it for. I had a little equity I it and felt good about it.

Hurricane Ida totalled it for me.

Today I got the insurance settlement offer and it was almost 9k over what I owed.

Yay me!

It's amazing how many criminals cannot STFU! Because they yak and 3ventually just give themselves up, probably why so many cops are so farkin' fat: they don't actually have to chase the lawbreakers, do they? You know, if the criminals would shut up and the cops had to give chase now and then, we'd be seeing a healthier America overall what with both sides getting a spot of exercise now and again.

Nope. That money goes into the general fund, in New York's case. Whether the money ever comes back to your district in the form of infrastructure depends on how eager your legislators are to do the party bosses' bidding.

B-b-b-b-b-b-but the elementary school has a big pothole in front of it? Screw you, pay them.

Especially since I think MTA Bridge & Tunnel headquarters is on Randalls Island, which means there's no way to drive there without using the tolled Triboro (RFK) Bridge.

PA is having this issue as well.  I expect most state that use toll by plate to start requiring front license plates in the very near future.

This. Fark off with tolls. If you can't budget properly to maintain a road, it's not important enough for your infrastructure & economy.

One of the things that irked me about Topeka's 1/2 cent sales tax increases every couple years: they spend 1 night patching potholes, then build a multimillion dollar water park in a rich neighborhood, while bridges are crumbling & roads falling into the rivers & creeks.
