That actually sounds like a somewhat affordable plan. It's gotta be a tiny fraction of the price to lease an airplane. And I always hear that moving freight by rail is the most affordable option, so how much could they charge to hook up one more car?

Maybe this is the next big app -- a rail version of an Uber/AirBNB mashup. Lease my private rail car from D.C. to St. Louis to San Francisco. Then find someone else that wants to bring it back the other way.

Er, they don't. Just like a yacht, you pay to store it at an appropriate facility, in this case, a railyard, usually one of Amtrak's.

$3.67 per mile. That's after monthly storage fees.

You wouldn't hook up to a freight train, you would tag along with Amtrak. This site is pretty good to get some details:

Dante Stephenson, the late Atlanta restaurant owner, had such a car. It was on a private siding next to the rail line. So in addition to maintaining the car, he had to pay for a track switch and its installation and maintenance.

My mom alleged that before he bought the rail car he had purchased the same house we had once lived in. That house is now gone, but she also claimed he had had a tunnel built from the garage to the house (the garage was at the very back of the property and to get to.it by car, we had to access a gravel lane via a driveway four doors away).

Keeping a car roadworthy can be expensive, as it has to comply with every new safety requirement that comes along in order for Amtrak to haul it.

BTW, one thing you can't get out of an airplane is a bedroom in a location where all of the rooms are sold out.  I've read stories of people who rented out their cars for events like New Year's Eve in Times Square, the Olympics, inaugurations, etc.

From everything I've read, it's not a hobby that you take up in order to save money over traditional ticketed rail travel.

No way, you have to pay amtrak to cert the thing, maintain it, drifters would probably break in at a rail yard and loot the thing and fark in your bed. It's the ultimate FU poors though. More so than a big private jet because it's such a massive useless expense of limited use.

The wife and I are taking Amtrak from Boston to SanFran for Christmas. For the two of us, and a private stateroom, it's a few thousand. So, more like a cruise. Will take 3 days, I think. I'm looking forward to it.

The last time I took a train (excluding commuter rail and Edaville/Durango-Silverton tourist trains) was in Australia, an overnight sleeper from Melbourne to Sydney about 20 years ago. It was cool (and equally pricey). Before that? Mom used to take my brother and me by train from DC to Boston to visit her mom. Same thing, overnight sleeper and a private room. Two of us did not sleep, and my mother probably didn't either. I was 6 and my brother was 4. It was probably a lot cheaper back then. I was always scared I'd fall off the train and never be found.

We used to take the kids to Edaville (back when it was the real thing) at Christmas. Steam trains are cool.

Oh, and I'm sure there are annual inspections, required maintenance and forms that can only be signed by one guy in Sioux Falls. Railway paperwork probably rivals airline paperwork. Easy, if you have an army of droids dedicated to doing it, hard if it's just you and the missus.

Every now and then, you will see one parked for a day or two at South Station in Boston. Sometimes as a way to stay for some special event (the convention center is about a mile walk from the station) and sometimes leased as a place to meet/recruit/sell for some corporation.

In the '80s my parents went in with 5 other couples and rented/leased a private rail car and a Pullman sleeper.  Another couple signed on as chef and steward.  They went from Buffalo to Seattle to Vancouver to Montreal to Buffalo, behind AMTRAK and Via Rail equipment.  They had a blast.  Their cars were at the end of the train, and the private car had it's own galley and dining room.  They could sit out on the platform at the rear of the private car and watch the scenery.

If my Powerball Plan works out, I'll do something similar.

Circa 1985: Stationed at Foot of 32nd St Naval Station, San Diego, CA. An officer aboard my ship had his own private coach as his residence. Base had to find a siding for him to park it on Base, make sure the tracks to that siding were in good condition so coach could be moved there without possibility of derailment (some had not been used since Vietnam War, or before), erect signs, paint parking spaces for vehicles, fence the area since it was now "housing" despite being in an industrial area of the Base, .... I transfered before he did but I think he was there for about 3 years. If I remember correctly, he transferred from Great Lakes, so Navy had to arrange the movement of his home along rail lines from there to San Diego. I transferred to another ship at 32nd St in 1991 and his coach was no longer there, but some remnants of the "housing" site were: fence and signs and parking spaces, which I really wanted to use but was afraid I'd be towed.

My USAF career Father liked mobile homes better than military housing and in the 1960s he made the Air Force move our "house" from base-to-base. It was actually easier than at typical move: everything stayed inside the mobile home, albeit boxed and on the floor, and when it arrived, after a brief inspection to insure no damage during movement, we moved in again and put everything back in place. They had to find us a lot and every time it was pretty nice. Parents used to wonder why more military families didn't opt for what we chose? Every couple of years, Parents up-graded to a larger home (sold the old one and bought a new one). Parents even got a "referral fee" if a family at the Base bought a mobile home, so they had "quiet" display and inspect parties to subtly sell. If they heard someone who had been at a party was buying a mobile home, they asked them to say they'd seen ours, but never mentioned they would receive a fee.

Like a railroad coach, our homes were filled with built-ins. To this day, I like (but do not live in) mobile (now modular) homes.  The only thing I hate is that seldom can modular home owners own the land under their homes: they often have to rent because many communities do not allow placement of modular homes on private lots within city limits, which is stupid. I have a letter I send monthly to representatives (different levels of government) advocating allowing modular homes be allowed to be placed on older lots, fill-in-lots, etc.  Which is worse: an empty lot with debris or an owner-occupied lot?

Had a Fairmont MT 19 for years. They are called Speeders. 20 hp Onan V twin and a 2 speed chain final drive transmission. Mine has the hydraulic turntable to lift it up  to spin it around to go the other direction. They also come with sliding handles to muscle them around or off the tracks. Ridden thosands of miles all over the western half of the USA. Places you would never see any other way than on the right of way. Lots and lots of different models. The CP has some very cool enclosed cab models. This became a hobby a few decades ago when Railroads started using Hi railers. 4 x 4 trucks with hydraulic flanged wheels. You also leased the tracks and are completely legal and have training.. Not like the bootleg runners on you tube.
