During the stop, the officer saw the individual move into the driver's seat before bringing the Tesla to a stop on the shoulder of I-80 eastbound just west of Powell Street, where the officer arrested Sharma. The Tesla was towed from the scene for evidence. CHP said the incident remains under investigation

Nobody told me I could do that. Who told him he could do that?

Hey everybody! There is this thing called a driver's license.

If the CEO of Ford called me and told me personally that I could let a chimp drive my car for me. Then sent me a registered letter affirming that. And if I then climbed in my car with my chimp and let him go and wreck the car and kill somebody, I am off the hook right? And if there is no wreck, then it means he is a good driver, so what is the problem?

The problem is that there is no legal structure to deal with this stuff. Do people not see this? When you get your license, the rules and laws are laid out, and none of them allow you to release control of your vehicle, period. People should be outraged. Can private companies really get away with testing stuff out on the roads after telling every driver explicitly that they need special training to drive and that there is an age limit? Are licenses a farce now? Already? Someone needs to announce that officially.

Somebody is getting a huge pass from regulators and police and public safety officials. And people are dying. Someone ring a bell please. Or is this just being ignored as a rounding error because, you know, 500,000 have died because of that other megalomaniac.

More people have died in Tesla autopilot crashes than were killed by the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. Maybe a regulator should have a look and make a ruling on this one way or another.

But, are Teslas coded to pull themselves over if they are busted breaking the law? Or do they attempt to evade and force police pursuits?

"Resisting" often gets dropped, depending.  Police aren't the ones who charge an individual, that's the DA's job.  Police will list everything they encounter that can possibly fit, then it's pared down.  Obviously we both know that what I wrote is an idealistic view of the process and farkers gnash their teeth over such things, but "resisting arrest" is very broad.  Also, f*ck that dude and his car, damn!  His driving privilege really should be revoked.

Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction

May 25, 2020 (MINNEAPOLIS) On Monday evening, shortly after 8:00 pm, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Chicago Avenue South on a report of a forgery in progress.  Officers were advised that the suspect was sitting on top of a blue car and appeared to be under the influence.
Two officers arrived and located the suspect, a male believed to be in his 40s, in his car.  He was ordered to step from his car.  After he got out, he physically resisted officers.  Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress.  Officers called for an ambulance.  He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance where he died a short time later.
At no time were weapons of any type used by anyone involved in this incident.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to investigate this incident at the request of the Minneapolis Police Department.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Body worn cameras were on and activated during this incident.
The GO number associated with this case is 20-140629.

That's how the Minneapolis PD described George Floyd's  murder.

The reason you are wrong is that there are currently no leased Teslas.   Nor are there thirty thousand dollar millionaires driving around in a 2012 3-series.

As soon as the Tesla market encompasses "people who can't afford this car, but need to be seen driving one", then and only when will BMW have competition for "biggest douche drivers".

The 'driver' of the Tesla definitely is a hazard to the other motorists on the road. The cop did the right thing pulling the idiot off the road. Assisted driving aids still require a human to take over when necessary. The idiot in the back seat doesn't qualify.

Prior to the Sunday arrest, members of the public had captured video of someone resembling Sharma operating a Tesla in the same reckless manner. An Oakland CHP officer had cited Sharma on April 27 for similar behavior.

Mmmkay, so he was warned not to do this very thing just days prior, and he decided for shiats and giggles to farkin' do it again?

Shred the car. Make him watch. Toss his license in after the car. Suspend him from getting another one. Since he likes riding in the back so much, I'm sure he'll love the bus. Aside from the driver's seat the entire thing is the back.

Nah, I don't actually give a shiat about Takata. The guy I was responding to gets super upset whenever Takata is mentioned. He thinks they were railroaded by the NHTSA despite all of deaths. But when a Bolt catches fire or a Tesla driver uses Autopilot irresponsibly he wants any and every regulatory board to be on the case because oh my goodness golly me lives are at stake!

Why, it's almost like that's not what he's concerned about at all...

That instinct to side against the police is understandable, but this guy's hobby was getting people to photograph him in the back seat while he let Autopilot drive.

Consumer Reports recently published an article about how to get Autopilot to work when you're not in the driver's seat. It's rather involved, but isn't particularly difficult. So, I think we're going to see more of these incidents until Tesla finally grows the stones to use their driver-facing camera for eye tracking. It can already tell if you're looking at the road, looking down, using a cell phone, etc., but they've only used it so far to disqualify people from the Full Self Driving beta program. If people continue to abuse Autopilot, they should just make it a standard feature for everything from ACC on up. There will be a ton of pearl-clutching about invasion of privacy or whatever, but it may be necessary. Americans are too stupid and selfish to have nice things.

I can imagine this technology being used to detect drowsy driving as well, and being adopted, and eventually required, by the FMCSA to require truckers to pull over when they're too tired to keep going.

I wonder how you'd go about training a computer to check for drowsiness. Frequency and duration of blinking/eye closing? Swerving? I'm sure someone smarter than me is working on it. And whether trucking companies and our gov't will have the wisdom to use that tech to make sure drivers get enough rest is a whole different problem.

Police brutality is a huge problem.
Police racism and sexism is a huge problem.
Police lying is a huge problem.
The thin blue line is a huge problem.

But police don't lie about every interaction with the public.  Every traffic stop isn't discriminatory.  Every interaction with the public doesn't end in police brutality.  Acting like they are only gives strength to the people who defend the bad behavior.

Likwit: I wonder how you'd go about training a computer to check for drowsiness. Frequency and duration of blinking/eye closing? Swerving? I'm sure someone smarter than me is working on it. And whether trucking companies and our gov't will have the wisdom to use that tech to make sure drivers get enough rest is a whole different problem.

I don't know the details, but I have read that research shows certain indicators, similar to what you describe, are related to drowsy driving, periods of microsleep, etc. The nodding-off can also happen, and at that state, the driver is in a very dangerous situation.
Of course, the risk is that experienced drivers will figure out how to game the system. There are techniques that can keep people from showing symptoms well beyond what should be permitted. The problem is, they are still getting tired, and will just bypass the "warning symptoms" stage and go straight to "asleep at the wheel". At the end of the day, as long as businesses perceive an incentive contrary to safety, field-level supervisors will encourage drivers to be unsafe, regardless of what the head shed says, or how many times they write eloquently about how they value safety and their employees.

HotLonelyTeenageGirl: As soon as the Tesla market encompasses "people who can't afford this car, but need to be seen driving one",

Ain't that just anyone driving a Model 3?

And you can lease them. Not sure what you're referring to about "no leases"

It's right on their website. 3 year leases.

Whatever, it's not like people doing a 72 month loan for a Tesla can't be in over their heads either.
