Probably that guy who played the "La Bamba" song, right?

Just kidding, he would have crashed the lander.

He got the idea for the skycrane descent stage from that episode of New BSG, rescuing the Fleet from New Caprica.

I dunno. On one hand the headline seems kinda racist.

On the other, Edward James Olmos seems to eerily cross over perfectly between memes.

I hereby demand that I be given a Fark account: We live in a sad world where Percy isn't blasting "Low Rider" while rolling across Mars, but after all the goth that Spirt and house that Opportunity played NASA decided to delete the MP3 folder.

Any sufficiently fast motor controller turn its motor into a speaker.  You can literally make the wheel motors play "Low Rider" as the rover rolls.  Percy has microphones to document the event.  JPL can make this happen if they want to.

What would that sound like on Mars? The atmosphere is less dense than on Earth.

Ok, NASA has me covered on that. Mars sound

So it would sound like you are further away and have lost a lot of the higher frequencies.

Congratulations to him. We need more engineers who aren't old white guys. There's undiscovered talent out there and we're wasting it by not encouraging it and helping to develop it. Good on JPL for having an intern program.

Its noit, we've just been conditioned by the clergy of wokeness to pretend certain groups do not express certain behaviors.

Except for white people, we do all kinds of hilarious stuff and everyone is encouraged to point it out.

It's a bona fide aspect of east LA culture.  I'm sure, living in that neighborhood, he would have loved a cool low rider when he was younger if he could have had one.  Nothing wrong with that.  Nothing wrong with low riders in general.

I guess to me if it had been a story about a kid who grew up in 1950's brooklyn made it to the JPL, and the fark headline had said "no wonder the rover was covered in Dodgers stickers".

But meh, I might just be in a good mood and giving subby the benefit of the doubt.

\ i'm mexican american BTW, wasn't particularly angered by the headline, but others' mileage may vary

His story is an exemplar for the benefits of early, *quality* education opportunity.  Anyone in a group will benefit from it, but someone(s) from a group will excel because of it!

All I know is that if you crash your low-rider van into someone's fence in East LA, don't call everyone that gathers around you "Ben-deckos".

It implies that everyone from Este Los owns a lowrider, which simply isn't true. Some of those locos drive big ass pickups that one needs a ladder to climb into.
