Reminds me of the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

Of course, there is no chance that the Verrazzano bridge will fail, because all the construction projects around New York and New Jersey are built and inspected by professionals who never cut corners in any way whatsoever.

You're right. But "functioning correctly to prevent failure" doesn't mean "safe to drive on". Closing it is the right call. I wouldn't want to be driving 40 tons of semi-trailer (or an empty semi, for that matter) across a heaving, shifting road surface.

Then why shut it down? Just put up a sign telling drivers, "Don't worry, be happy!"

Right? When we read a blog, we need it to supply all the actionable facts, so we are prepared when building our own bridges and deciding when to shut them down for unsafe conditions.

And I thought it was bare-knuckled driving that one time I crossed the bridge in a fog so dense no one dared go anywhere near the speed limit and you hoped whoever was behind you did the same. At least I was on the lower level (no trucks). Driving across a dancing VZ would freak me out.

They didn't even include a primer on Fourier Analysis so that we could identify the harmonics within the sinusoid.  I really hope someone gets fired for this blunder.

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge failed 4 months after it was opened.  The Verrazanno has been in service for 60 years.  NYC has never had a major bridge or highway failure, the closest was the Mianus River Bridge on I95 in Connecticut and a drawbridge over the Passaic River in NJ which was stuck in the open position for (IIRC) a week.  Other parts of the country see spectacular highway and bridge failures, some caused by earthquake as in San Francisco and some caused by who knows what as in the I35 bridge over the Mississippi. But don't let that dissuade you from your opinion.

Fun fact: That video is not shown at the correct speed. It was not flopping around nearly as fast as it looks in the video. Still pretty impressive though. They have some twisted chunks of metal from the bridge lying around outside the Harbor History Museum here.

I've seen that before, but a few days ago I was bored at home and flipped on "engineering disasters" or whatever it's called, and the episode was about that bridge. Watching the footage legit gave me anxiety and ramped up my vertigo to a point I couldn't even turn the TV off, just went to my bedroom for a while.

I only would have ever read it on fark. So, whatever I pay to Drew divided by a certain number. Probably requires Fourier Analysis to figure it out.

About 30 years ago, I was on the Bear Mountain Bridge in NY, which is set up in a spot that funnels wind...during a big storm. Guy in front of me panics and STOPS on the swaying bridge, leaving me and 10 other cars stuck behind him. There was a collective "yeah, fark THAT" and we all passed him.

I think he set the record for being flipped off by the most consecutive drivers.

Because "Safely handling extreme wind loading" does not equal "safe to drive on," esp. for the 90% of Americans who believe they are above average drivers.

Yep. 3D printing, too. In some cases I can see the advantage, but most of the stuff I see that's been printed/cnc/laser cut is just more boring shiat designed on a computer. If you like it, that's great, but to me (at least on the home-builder level) it's just... underwhelming. Oh. Laser cut. Neat. (I built this. You built this?... I built this)

It's just more ugly shiat that's going to end up in a landfill. See also - all the ridiculous magical resin pours into wood. That aesthetic is going to age faster than glass tile backsplashes and granite counters.

The Tacoma collapsed after 4 monthes. The Verrazzano has been standing for about 60 years, and has gone through much worse than the wind we had yesterday.

:D
As they should be! They are fighting for the rights to cross the bridge, against the many sheeples who are content with the bridge lockdown. If they want to cross the bridge, why is it anyone's business? In fact, i made plans to cross the bridge with 50 of my friends all at the same time, and I'll be damned if a little bridge lockdown stops me from doing it from under the bridge.
The media is lying to us about this so called wind. The statistics of people dying from wind has shown that more people died yearly from other causes. . They close this bridge while keeping other bridges open. Those bridges that are connected to their corporate chums. Its the great reset.
If this was canada, there'd be someone who would cross the bridge despite the bridge lockdown, and then arrested, and then a gofundme would be started to the tune of 300k.
