When revolutions begin, symbols of the old regime are the first to be taken down

This isnt erasing history, this is about creating a new future

In the Hungarian revolution of 1956 the citizens were highly patriotic and wanted to wave flags. But the only flags they had were ones that had a communist symbol on them. So they just cut the middle out and waved those around.

Nothing like this has happened to our flag yet, but it would not surprise me one bit if some group decides to copy what these folks did in '56 and cut out a big hole in the middle and wave that flag around.

Excellent! And I'm glad the city said they support the protesters.

It's about damn time all this racist shiat came down. Enough is enough!

And you better believe I'm as behind Native Americans as I am Black people and everyone else suffering under systemic racism and bigotry.

When I was a young girl, I read a ton of "western" paperback books as my dad and I criss-crossed the country on his final postings as an AF officer. I had a lot of time in the car and this was pre-everything. Anyway, I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and became enraged (I'm 12 at the time). I devoured everything about Native Americans I could get my hands on, fiction and non, and became very much a supporter of Native American rights and supportive of their grievances. I considered the whole thing to be "very unfair!"

Flash forward a few years, I have a job in the cafeteria of a Base Exchange and one of the older women who worked with me had a tattoo of a blue paw on her hand between her thumb and forefinger. In those days, it was VERY uncommon to see an ordinary person with a tattoo, let alone a woman. So, once when we were alone, I asked her about it.

She became very angry and defensive, and me being 16 and easily upset, I started to tear up and asked her why she was angry with me. I think she saw then that there was exactly zero mean intent in me, so she explained that it was her tribal tattoo. I think she was startled by my gasp of joy and delight! I had met a Native American for the first time! I was very silly and excited and asked her a ton of questions, and I must have been so puppy-ishly endearing that she finally smiled and laughed with me and told me about when she got the tattoo and just like that we were friends, even though she had to be thirty years older at least. She told me that she had never told anyone else at our workplace what the tattoo meant to her, and that made me feel special.

She also told me about a bunch of times she'd been mocked and discriminated against, which made me feel terrible. She let me cry for her.

I say we make Puerto Rico a state and give Texas to Mexico, that way we don't have to change the number of stars in the flag. We could take one of the stripes off and make Rhode Island a county in Connecticut, because come on, it shouldn't even be a state. And it definitely shouldn't have 2 senators. There are ranches in Arizona bigger than Rhode Island.

What funny is that Columbus wouldn't consider himself an Italian.  A unified Italy didn't happen until the late 1800's, and it can be argued still hasn't culturally happened.  So Italian's love him but as a Genoan he would not have considered the southern Italians that make up so much of American Italians to be his countrymen.

It's amusing that Columbus was such an astonishingly worthless, dickish motherfarker that he's getting arbitrarily added to the list when we're going after monuments that otherwise have nothing to do with Columbus whatsoever.

"These confederate statues were erected by the KKK as explicit threats to black people in the 1920s-30s and during the civil rights movement, and solely and often in as many words glorify treason and slavery, representing exclusively historical figures who have no other significance whatsoever to anyone other than glorifying slavery and treason... oh, and also tear down the ones of Columbus, he represents something entirely different but goddamn was that motherfarker a huge farking asshole."

1976: Stationed at Naval Base Rota, Spain. Ceremonies for Bicentennial assigned me as sideboy/honor guard, then changed to escort for some of the Spanish Royals being dusted off & trotted out now Franco died as the dictatorship changed over to a monarchy. Mine was the sister of Cristobal Colon XIV (I think, not sure of the number now - looked it up & a London paper wrote XXth, neither know nor care now). They were both introduced with a string of titles that definitely lengthened the ceremonies (in English & Spanish); the most head-cocking being "Hereditary Lord Admiral of the Ocean Seas."

Navy joke: Columbus thought he'd reached China. When he left, he didn't know where he was going, when he got to America's, he didn't know where he was, & when he returned, he didn't know where he'd been. Naturally, he was made an admiral.

The castle in Rota has a sign saying Columbus stayed there the night before his initial voyage. I enjoyed my time in Rota.

Hubby was born in the Azores (Faial); they'd begun being settled about 40 years before, so Prince Henry Navigator had helped supply Columbus with knowledge of what to expect, probably. But, what has always bothered me is how Columbus grabbed up 12-20 Islanders who'd been living their lives (probably more hard than idyllic), clapped them in chains as slaves, brought them back on the return voyage to be trotted around & gawped at. Finally, when the new-slave smell'd worn off, they were sold into oblivion, never to see home or family again. It takes a special kind of assh0le to be a slaver. You can give Columbus titles & shiny late-Medieval pimp-trinkets & codpieces but that's what he was: a slave trader looking for a fresh source of flesh to herd up, corral & sell. Others wanted gold & glory, lands, etc... The first thing he did was to inflict misery by enslaving the locals naive enough to welcome him. He didn't even keep acurate enough charts to record positively where he'd been. Some "sailor!" What a horrible person.

His trips were historical but no reason to celebrate. Take his day off the calendar. In fact, we should never idolize anyone. Very few humans of the billions who have lived deserve a day of honor. Strip them all off the calendar and concentrate on events & ideals worthy of note.

Leap Day only occurs every 4 years. For that reason alone, ever since learing of it as a child, I made it my life's work to have the day off & celebrate it. I don't remember ever failing.

You have to understand that much in the way Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover America, white progressives were the first people to discover depression and low self-esteem.  The safety of their sheltered lives has caused them to lash out at the closest thing they have ever had to a threatening adversary, which is the pictures in their history books.

The individuals who comprise this group feel so thoroughly defeated by their comfortable middle- and middle-upper class existence, they have decided they have a better chance of changing their reality by retroactively re-engineering the entirety of society than getting up in the morning to lift weights and eat a steak -- possibly even both at the same time, lifting the steak into their mouth could be the workout, assuming they find a cow large enough.

But instead of paying five dollars for an excellent cut of meat, they will instead spend five dollars, earning the right to post in political discussion threads on Fark before anyone else has the right to do so, and for one entire month, they will discuss current events with other individuals who will die childless and alone, as they ban together to fight the symbols which represent the imagined enemies in their head.

Sounds like a great deal.  I'll take twelve years of this shiat.

"Columbus and his men encountered the naked Taino people on the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas, so named for the Savior whom Columbus believed had delivered him to land. All parties remained peaceful, and Columbus specifically instructed his crews not to take advantage of the Indians."

"The Tainos told the explorers about less peaceful tribes, which explained the marks and wounds on the natives' bodies. Those tribes inhabited the Isla de Carib, and they were known for two things: elegant cotton rugs and eating people. Settlers who entered their huts found cotton rugs, some of which they brought back to Spain, and large cuts of human flesh. Other native tribes informed the explorers that the Caribs considered babies a particular delicacy."

When Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus voyaged to the Caribbean in the 1490s, he not only discovered new lands, at least one of his men would document his own rape and torture of an indigenous woman. Michele de Cuneo, a noble friend of Columbus, tells of a "Carib woman" given to him by the admiral. When she fought back against his attempted sexual attacks, he "took a piece of rope and whipped her soundly...finally we came to an agreement in such manner that I can tell you she seemed to have been brought up in a school for harlots." Columbus' ships would eventually sail back to Europe, carrying more than 1,000 slaves.

Enjoy Hitler 2.0 bub.

gar1013: I'm fine with this, not because I agree with it, but because every time a statue gets torn down, it's helping Trump get re-elected.

Keep it up.  They can always make new statues of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Columbus.

I don't think it's enough to help Trump get re-elected. Hes too big of an idiot.

The ugly strains of nouveau racism, class politics, revisionist history, and anti-Americanism that Democrats are whole-heartedly embracing may help the GOP in Congress, though.

I have no love for Columbus or his statue, but liberals are working overtime to toss the baby out with the bathwater these days.

snoproblem: Lurk Who's Talking: 1976: Stationed at Naval Base Rota, Spain.

His ...

It's been increasingly clear that naming the Catholic Fraternal Order "Knights of Columbus" was the height of irony.  They probably performed more positive and worthwhile deeds in its first week, back in 1882, than their namesake did in his whole miserable life.

They ought to change the name, really.

The statues were ironic as well. Columbus statues were erected by Italian Americans to show people that they mattered. At the time they were subject to racial discrimination.

Now that I have to agree with.
Me, personally, I am half tempted to vote for Trump, because we all have become too comfortable with censorship.

A raping gentrificationer?

Yes, you are a useful idiot trying to put your morals onto that of someone from the year 1492.  What about "Baltimore", or should we say "Lord Baltimore" the slave owner.  Burn that city to the ground now! Arbragyaaifgah!

Dude rape is in the Bible. That doesn't make it less disgusting.
It's sad I have to write this.
😔

So now we should burn down all churches and synagogues, it is after all what all communists and Nazis end up doing at one point or another once they gain control.

Which is really ironic.
Considering they coined their own racial slurs for other races.

I guess we could have a party every few months celebrating all the wars that churches  started that would be fun

I knew that damn statue was responsible for racism and political corruption!

I tend to believe that statement. In Portland, Oregon, the criminals vandalized a statue of a freaking elk, which has been there since 1900. They must be on the quota system.

Maybe you're not following the timeline?

Just maybe, if you did those things, this would not be happening?

Just like cotton is the only reason that crap happened back then.

My take away is? Don't have things done for you at the lowest price you can find!
Looking at you apple and foxxcon

The Repeated Meme: Aren't the Columbus statues there because previous governments wanted the WASPs to not hate Italian immigrants and treat them as sub-human?

If so, then Subby probably should have gone with the Ironic tag.

No. They are there for vote pandering. Most statues of people of people from the large ethnic groups that came during the mis-immigration waves of the late 1800s/early 1900s are up for that reason.

Yup. Back in the early twentieth they were considered as non-whites. By embracing racism the were able to "join the club". That still didn't work 100 percent.
