No matter how many “sweater weather” emails retailers send you in September, the urge to actually wear anything other than a T-shirt doesn’t come on until the weather finally turns gray and damp. And then you remember why sweaters exist and its 24/7 cozy-town (cue those same retailers exhaling in unison). Jake Gyllenhaal is right there with you on this. The actor was photographed in New York earlier this week wearing a Richard James sweater so triumphantly FALL, it might as well have had orange and red maple leaves embroidered on it. He didn’t pull the move early—a style god never season pushes—he waited until a cool October night when a sweater made sense. And then he went for it in a cranberry cashmere turtleneck, looking like a model in an advertisement for Thanksgiving Dinner, Rich People Edition.

The thing that makes nice sweaters so valuable, nice turtlenecks in particular, is that they give you the sensation of being under your duvet, and the appearance of someone who never sleeps in. They also make you feel like you’re wearing a proper outfit in a way that a T-shirt or sweatshirt cannot. Jake Gyllenhaal wore his turtleneck with a pair of navy trousers and brown lace-up boots, but it could have just as easily been chinos and chukkas or jeans and loafers. A good sweater just does all of the work for you. Seriously, where have they been all our lives?
