So you left your phone at the bar last night. Or maybe it was swiped from your bag while you were walking through a busy crowd. Either way, you are now phoneless, cut off from the world, and frustrated. What to do?

Thankfully, having your unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number will allow you to blacklist your lost (or stolen) phone with your carrier, and it’ll help law enforcement confirm that a found phone is actually yours.

You can find your phone’s IMEI on the device itself, on the original packaging, or on documents or contracts from your carrier—but none of those options are great if your phone is lost (obviously) and the box and paperwork are also nowhere to be found.

Not to worry, though. If you’re an Android user, the IMEIs for your linked devices are stored in your Google account. Here’s how to locate them.

  1. Go to Find My Device. You may have to log into your Google account.

  2. Identify your missing Android phone in the list on the left.

  3. Click the “i” icon next to that device. The IMEI should be listed in the pop-up box.

As a bonus, you can use this same “Find My Device” screen to actually locate your phone as long as it is turned on, signed in, connected to data or wifi, and has location services and Find My Device enabled. But if all those boxes aren’t checked, at least you have your IMEI.

And don’t forget all the other essential security features you should set up on your phone before you lose it.
