For example, Tyron Woodley didn’t want to wrestle and started looking for the big right hand because he’s in his late 30’s, he’s too big and muscular. And if he tries to wrestle he is too old and slow and exhausted.

The explosive takedowns aren’t there anymore.

Also Dan Henderson. Stopped wrestling throws a savage big right hand cuz he always has the power.

I suspect Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum are the same.

If they could still wrestle well they would use it more often like GSP.

EDIT: I don't know what the fuck I just said I'm going to bed.

Aren't Whittaker and Gastelum like 28?

You're suggesting they're not explosive at 28?

not sure if you comprehend wrestling
<{fry}>

I think the level of wrestling needed to be dominant at this point in mma is very high. It used to be if you competed at all in wrestling you could smoke most opponents by spamming takedowns where stand up was a “punchers chance” for anyone. Now I think the level of wrestling and bjj is at a generally higher level and there’s less pay off for offensive wrestling

I'd imagine a lot of them develop knee problems by their 30s and it becomes harder to wrestle energetically like before.

Too much wrestling, not enough wrasslin. CM and Bork would be champs if they stayed true to their roots.

Agree.

I also think that there's a bigger pay off to blend striking and wrestling seamlessly as opposed to being "Great at Wrestling" which, if you can't preoccupy your opponents with strikes, becomes largely ineffective. GSP is the mold for how you use striking and wrestling to benefit each other. The one to mask their takedowns the best can use their wrestling to the max. You gotta be able to threaten with strikes and that takes a few years of dedicated training. Wrestlers are having problems and need to start MMA training sooner.

TS I suspect you’re right when it comes to Dan Henderson, but Whittaker has had no reason to implement an offensive wrestling game plan for the last couple of years. His last 3 fights have been Jacare and Yoel twice!

Whittaker actually started amateur wrestling a few years ago. He started his career as a striker.

I think most of them get a KO and then fall in love with that feeling of power and KOing someone and then abandon their wrestling roots... Ala Josh Koscheck after he KOd Yoshida. Same with Hendricks, etc...

wrestling is a tool, a muscle that has to be kept sharp. To do so, you can't work on your other skillsets. I think most wrestlers fall in love with the less grinding regimen of striking, thinking they can fall back on their wrestling, but eventually the blade grows rusty. Even Askren talks about how the one time he worked on striking vs Hieron how his wrestling disappeared.
