Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective who stars in 4 novels and 56 short stories written by British author Arthur Conan Doyle from 1887 to 1927.

Though not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the best known. By the 1990s, there were already over 25,000 stage adaptations, films, television productions and publications featuring the detective, and Guinness World Records lists him as the most portrayed human literary character in film and television history.

The big 2 English-language Sherlock Holmes TV series are Sherlock Holmes, made by Granada from 1984 to 1994:

and Sherlock (BBC1, 2010-2017)

which was set in the present day.

There was also a very good adaptation made in the USSR from 1979 - 1986 for any Russian speakers.

Sherlock Holmes is one of my favourite franchises and I have been a fan since my youth. I have read some of the books, listened to some of the audiobooks and seen some of the TV serieses and films. Granada 1984-1994 is the best screen portrayal imo.

There was an American series called Elementary, which ran from 2012-2019, was set in contemporary New York City and featured Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson. I would stay away from that one. There have also been 2 recent films, Sherlock Holmes (2009) and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) which I didn't like but were fairly successful. They are not based directly on Doyle's books and the material has been debased for Hollywood.

Any other Sherlock Holmes fans here? I am going to see a Sherlock Holmes play this summer.

I liked the BBC Sherlock Holmes before both actors got popular with American movies. Speaking of BBC stuff. Idris Alba has a new Luther movie. I liked the Luther show. It was before he got big in the movie world.

I like the Jonny Lee Miller series Elementary, Brett Ratner I grew up on.
Murder By Decree and Seven Per Cent Solution are my favourite movie versions. Wasn't keen on the Bendydick Cuminbatches show but I like most iterations

Yes.
Read all the books about him, even before movies or tv.
Was fascinated by deductive reasoning.

RDJ ruined Holmes for me.

I believe he enters the public domain next year. So, get ready for even more movies.

Did elementary get cancelled? I remember watching it a few seasons deep then I just stopped.

They wrapped it up after six seasons I think, not sure if it was cancelled as such but they ended it with a proper send off

It was fun, plus I'd lick Lucy Lui's bum hole

Nice. I will put it on the watch list.

@Crazy Librarian Rate Lucy Liu for me.

I liked young Sherlock Holmes

Too bad we never got a sequel.

It also has an after credit scene which the reveals
the real name of villain professor of the movie.

Yes, he is a great character. I only watched the Jeremy Brett series you have above a few years ago and it was quite good. I'm a fan of Peter Cushing so he was my favourite.
I feel annoyed and disgusted by the RDJ/Ritchie version and I haven't bothered with the Cummerbatch one.

The older ones were great. I even developed an appreciation for the carriages and buggies in the Jeremy Brett series.

My interest started nearly 20 years ago when I was stuck on a few nightshifts with nothing to do or read and looked a few of the books up online as they were now in the public domain.

I love Sherlock Holmes but the only good onscreen adaptation was the BBC one starring doctor strange and the hobbit.

That's in my top ten best shows ever. Loved every minute.

Pretty much every other show and movie sucks ass. With the Lucy Liu version being the worst.

The TV show House was heavily inspired by Holmes, with the twist being that he solves medical diagnostic mysteries instead of murder mysteries. Which you could argue has higher stakes, since catching a killer doesn't save the victim, but diagnosing and treating a mysterious ailment can.
