Jon Jones is clearly planning on moving up to Heavyweight unless the pictures on his social media are fake.
Many are questioning why then he won't just jump right in and fight the current champion Francis Ngannou?
While there is likely a real issue surrounding his compensation, under normal circumstances that would be negotiated and a more lucrative deal could be reached. Does anyone really think Jon Jones would leave $15,000,000 on the table, never fight again, and retire for $0 but an in tact legacy?
It appears more likely Jon Jones would fight Francis for the right price, which according to Dana White is $30,000,000. Since that is not going to happen, is it not likely Jon is waiting for Francis to lose his belt and a less high-variance/high-risk competitor (in Jons eyes) to become HW champion?
The UFC has not yet confirmed Francis will be fighting Derrick Lewis for the title in August, though that is the current speculation. What if Ciryl Gane (#4) were to knockout or submit Alexander Volkov (#5) during their June 26th Fight Night headliner?
Wouldn't the UFC potentially attempt to make their international return (with fans) in France headlined by a HW title fight of Gane/Ngannou for October? Gane has a backstory with Ngannou, is undefeated, and likely making peanuts compared to the other top HWs; he is exactly the type of fighter you want to put in a title fight.
Now October comes and Gane who is trained by the head coach who taught Francis Ngannou all his fundamentals fights and defeats Ngannou. Is Jon still sitting out for his $30,000,000 or does he take the $10,000,000-$15,000,000, make his HW debut, and fight a technical fighter in Gane that lacks knockout power for the HW title?
Jon may be waiting for a changing of the guard, which under the right circumstances could happen within six months.
