Why did Holloway get an instant rematch anyway?

People want to argue that the first fight wasn't as one sided as it looks but fact is Volkanovski completely shut down Holloway. And there wasn't a single minute in the fight where Holloway was able to get his game going. Unless Holloway changes his fighting style completely it is hard to see how he can win the rematch, since there's no way to check those calf kicks while moving in. And the UFC is doing a massive disservice to Holloway by expecting him to come up with a new game plan in just 6 months.

He lost every round. That are you talking about?

Gave him the 4th and 5th but I can see why they would be given to Volk.
Volkanovski was as clear as a winner as you could get tho.

Edit : When I say that I don't see anybody getting ultra-dominated, I'm talking about the rematch.

There isn't a clear #1 contender and Max was a dominant champ and been one of the most active fighters in UFC history, never had issues promotion wise, stepped up for short notice fights etc

Zabit and Yair haven't done enough yet. We haven't even seen Zabit in a 5 rounder yet and he's looked terrible in 3rd rounds thus far. The winner of their bout has a claim. KZ has only won 2 in a row and got KTFO 1 1/2 years ago. Neither have Kattar or Emmett. Who else is there? Ortega? LMAO

I'm almost always against instant rematches of the first fight was decisive but a rematch does make sense in this case

Max had no problem in giving the previous dominant Champ an immediate rematch even though he decisively won by actually finishing Aldo.

You reap what you sow and Max has paid his dues.

I get what you’re saying but with this method we simply eliminate contenders. This is the reason why some fighters need to wait 5 years to fight for the belt.

It's intriguing how many high level people in the sport thot Max was robbed in the first fight

Let's be real, Holloway won the last 2 rounds and Volkonovski basically kicked Max's shins for 15 minutes. Let's just see how this one plays out before we start the "Max doesn't deserve an instant rematch" bullshit.

Almost every dominant champion gets an immediate rematch. And if I were to be the matchmaker I would done that same since former champs have a slight chance of getting another shot after they lose the belt, either because of mileage or just aging or a combination of the two. Yes Aldo, gets another shot and so did Stipe and he won it back but they're like the outliers if we're looking at the history of the sport.

Thast's not really what happened Aldo stepped up in short notice to replace Edgard

and then Max fought Edgar even though Edgar was on a 1 fight win streak against journeyman Cub Swanson.

you do favors, you get favors.

I thought Volk won the fight, but it wasn't one of those truly dominate performances that is of the general historical perspective with the changing of the guard. Aldo took out Brown in two rounds, Conor took out Aldo in seconds, Max took out Aldo in a couple rounds.

Lets see how this plays out. Max could very well come back, make the adjustments needed, and beat Volk into a pulp. Or, Volk improves upon what he did last time around, and either stops Max or wins a very, very lopsided UD. Either way, it's probably better for the division in the long run that they rematch. A lot of the guys at the top of the chain at FW aren't clear cut contenders, so this gives the division some time to play and work itself out.

I thought Volk dominate Max when I first watched it but when the UFC uploaded it to YouTube and I watched it again, it wasn't as dominant as I thought. He won the rounds but a couple were close.

Max deserves the rematch.

Max wanted it, but its a bad call from his side. If Max loses again, he is forever done at 145 and that gives Volkanovski even more momentum.
That being said, WAAAAR Alexander the Great!

Maxs problem is that he is pillow fisted. Good cardio, tough chin , good heart, decent straight/cross. Oversized for the division through a nasty weight cut. No power shot. No hooks. Weak kicks.

Guys like Volk and Poirier can really put a hurt on him and turn him into a human punching bag.
