Last year, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor boxed in one of the biggest fights of all time, there were immediate rumblings of a possible rematch, potentially in MMA. Now, this outcome is starting to have the feeling of inevitability.
Despite having retired from boxing after the MayMac bout, a few weeks ago Mayweather began teasing on his social media about a possible jump into the UFC. McGregor responded in kind and suddenly the biggest fight of 2017 was set to take over 2018 as well. Then, this weekend, Mayweather’s father and trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., threw gasoline on the spark of the rematch, telling the Mayweather Boxing Channel that though he doesn’t understand it, he believes his son is genuinely interested in fighting in the UFC.
“The way I see it, I have to believe that this is where it’s going. The way it looks, I think so.
“I don’t know what the legacy is because as of now, he has enough money and he’s got enough to live until his life runs out. I don’t even know how to say it because there ain’t no way to say it because everything is done right now. I wouldn’t [advise him to fight in MMA]. As his trainer, no, as his father, no. I want him to have all the money he’s got. The money he’s got, he’s got enough money - look here, it’s crazy money, man. He’s his own man though, that’s one thing about him.”
In sheer economic numbers, Mayweather Jr. is the most successful boxer of all time, compiling a 50-0 record and earning hundreds of millions of dollars while doing so. Mayweather reportedly made over $300 million for “The Money Fight” with McGregor and so the chance to run that back and make another tidy sum would appear to be enticing Mayweather to consider cutting his retirement short.
And if Mayweather Jr. does choose to return to fightsport by making the jump to MMA, his father says he will be right there with him. Mayweather Sr. says if it happens he thinks his son can win a few fights in MMA but that overall, jumping into a new sport will be bad for his son’s sporting legacy.
“I’m gonna tell you the truth about it, I think he can win a few fights but I think it’s best to leave it alone. You can do your own thing but you’re in somebody else’s playground now and holes and stuff are in there. You just can’t do that. Don’t get me wrong, I believe he can beat some fighters like the same as he did with the other guy but it ain’t worth it. Anytime you’ve done what he’s done, there ain’t no other way he can go right now but backwards. That’s the only way he can go right now.”

A primer to MMA call outs.
Fighter C. calls out fighter B. because they’re too scared to fight someone ranked lower than them. Fighter B says it doesn’t make sense to risk fighting someone below them. Fighter B then calls out fighter A. (ranked higher) for being scared to fight him. ♻️ pic.twitter.com/GM060nxRos
