'The better team won, I believe': Chris Wilder pulls no punches in assessment of Sheffield United's first defeat of the season by Leicester

  • The Blades suffered their first loss of the season by Leicester at Bramall Lane
  • Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes netted while Oli McBurnie scored for the hosts
  • Wilder praised striker McBurnie as one of the few positives from the 2-1 defeat

Chris Wilder felt that Oli McBurnie's first goal for Sheffield United was one of the few positives to take from their 2-1 defeat at home by Leicester.

The Blades boss did not pull any punches in his assessment of their performance, even it did feel a little harsh on his players.

'The better team won, I believe,' said Wilder after their first loss of the season.

'We didn't do enough. The first half performance was far from what we expect. I've never known us give the ball away so cheaply.

'Out of possession we weren't brave enough either. Regardless of the quality of the opponent, I'm looking at our standards and that was way below the necessary level to win a football match.'

McBurnie, though, had given them hope of a point after heading an equaliser just after the hour. It was his first for the club since signing from Swansea City for £20million.

'Oli's general play is excellent,' said Wilder. 'Him and Billy Sharp coming on gave the centre halves more problems than Callum Robinson and David McGoldrick did in the first half. To score a goal is great for Oli and he is knocking on the door to start now. His performance is a highlight for us.'

But he reserved special praise for new signing Oli McBurnie, who scored his first Blades goal
