I fear Sean Dyche won't get chance he deserves... bigger clubs are worried about fan reaction if they were to appoint the Burnley boss

  • Sean Dyche's reputation may see him overlooked for top managerial roles
  • The Burnley boss has a remarkable record at Turf Moor and got them in Europe
  • Dyche's management at Burnley is reminiscent of Roy Hodgson at Fulham

There is a perception that Sean Dyche is a one-trick pony. That if he turned up as Tottenham manager, he'd turn them into Burnley rather than adapt his style working with better players.

I couldn't disagree more. Sean does what he does because it's best for Burnley to get sustained success but he's experienced enough to be a different manager if the situation demanded it.

Unfortunately, bigger clubs like Tottenham and Everton are worried by the fans' reaction if they went for him. So, will he ever become England manager? It's doubtful. Is it right he should be discounted? No, not at all.

Sean's record at Burnley is remarkable and, having studied their game at Arsenal last Saturday, I think they'll have a good season. Wolves away will be an excellent test on Sunday.

He is unapologetic for setting Burnley up as he sees fit and he clearly has the players onside because they wouldn't perform to those standards unless they respected him.

It reminds me of Roy Hodgson's time at Fulham. Our style was non-negotiable and we went all the way to the Europa League final, a fantastic achievement for a smaller club.

Burnley have a definitive identity and togetherness, you can see what they are trying to do on the pitch. At Arsenal, they had an excellent defensive shape and were hard to break down with the two front men dropping off together to fill any gaps.

That only comes by being well-drilled in training and when Burnley got forward, they had a plan of getting width and crossing the ball into dangerous areas as early as possible.

Sean's recruitment has been outstanding. A lot of managers wouldn't have taken a chance on Ashley Barnes, Ashley Westwood, Chris Wood and others at the top level. They have now proved they are Premier League players.

Despite all that, I'm still not sure a bigger club like Everton, Newcastle or Spurs would go for Sean. I don't really know why. I think he would adapt to different expectations and budgets. It is naive to think a man of his intelligence and years in the game wouldn't be able to change.

I don't think for one second he'd struggle at a big club. He certainly has the presence to deal with players of all levels. But which chairman is going to give him a chance when the perception from supporters is he only plays one way.

It's hard in an interview for him to persuade the hierarchy at a big club that he wouldn't duplicate what he has done at Turf Moor.

Like all English managers who prove themselves in the Premier League over a number of years, he should be a contender at some stage for the national team job.

Yes, he has been relegated, but so was Gareth Southgate. And my goodness, didn't Sean learn from the experience and bounce back.

He would be capable of managing England at some stage but has to go to a bigger club first and show he can play a different way. My fear is that he may not get the chance. With no disrespect intended to Burnley fans, I hope he does.
