Barcelona 3-2 Wolfsburg: Spanish giants win the Women's Champions League after a dramatic comeback with Fridolina Rolfo grabbing the winner after Patri Guijarro's quick-fire brace in Eindhoven

Barcelona mounted a remarkable second half comeback to come from 2-0 down to beat Wolfsburg 3-2 in the women’s Champions League final.

The Catalans trailed 2- at the break after goals from Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp but Patricia Guijarro’s brace and a Fridonlina Rolfo strike earned them a third European trophy.

Barca were defeated by Lyon in last year’s final but were heavy favourites against a Wolfsburg side who lost the German league title to Bayern Munich.

But for 45 minutes the shock was on and a Wolfsburg victory would have been bad news for Chelsea, who would have dropped into the second round of qualifying for next year’s competition due to England’s coefficient ranking.

But a Barca triumph guaranteed their place in the group stage and the Catalans’ domination finally paid dividends.

Lionesses’ stars Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh both started for Barca, with the former becoming the first Englishwoman to win the Champions League with two different clubs after lifting the trophy three times with Lyon.

It was also Bronze’s first game since undergoing knee surgery last month, with England boss Sarina Wiegman watching on in the stands.

‘We made it hard for ourselves in the first half but we know we’ve got quality to come back into any game,’ Bronze said.

‘I don’t think we were ever worried about having to score three goals which is a crazy feeling - that’s the talent of this team.’

Bronze, though, got off to a nightmare start as she gave the ball away for the opening goal just three minutes in.

The defender was caught in possession by Pajor and the Wolfsburg forward took a couple of touches before unleashing a powerful strike that Barca goalkeeper Sandra Panos could only palm into the top corner of the net.

Barca had nearly 70 per cent possession in the first half but out of nothing found themselves 2-0 down before half-time. Pajor turned provider as her cross picked out an unmarked Popp, who stabbed home at the back-post.

The Catalans needed a fast start to the second half and they got it as Guijarro scored twice in the first five minutes. The first saw the midfielder rifle Caroline Graham Hansen’s cross into the roof of the net before she headed in Aitana Bonmati’s delivery two minutes later.

The turnaround was complete with 20 minutes to go as Wolfsburg failed to clear their lines, allowing Rolfo to finish into the roof of the net from close range.
