  • The Times claimed supporters will be expected to wear face masks at all time
  • Strict guidelines will be in place to ensure a safe matchday experience for fans

Premier League fans attending top flight fixtures this weekend will be expected to wear face masks even while seated, according to reports.

The Times have claimed that the limited number of spectators who will mark the return of crowds at matches will have to don their masks at all times.

The mandatory requirement is believed to go further than the government's guidance for supporters at games during the coronavirus pandemic.

After the lifting of the UK's second lockdown, it was revealed that grounds will be re-opened for small attendances for the first time in the top division since March.

Temperature checks will take place around venues before supporters are permitted entry, and social distancing measures will also be in place to ensure a safe environment.

The decision to enforce masks in every area of stadia will help boost the Premier League's bid to convince the government, and public health authorities, that larger crowds should be permitted in the near future.

The mass rollout of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine is expected to begin imminently and this nationwide campaign will also play a crucial role in allowing full-scale attendances to flock back to games.

It is understood the extra requirements were agreed upon and ratified by all 20 top flight clubs at their meeting on Thursday.

Supporters falling in line with the rules concerning face masks are expected to make it easier for grounds to comply with regulations and allow in even more people.

The same report highlights the social-distancing length needs to be just one metre when everyone present is wearing a mask, in comparison to the two metre measure which presents more problems for clubs.

Fans will certainly be braced for a very different matchday experience this weekend.

The re-introduction of the tier system across the country determines the maximum attendance for each stadium in the upper reaches of the football pyramid.

Clubs based in Tier 2 can welcome back 2,000 spectators, with 4,000 supporters allowed inside Tier 1 venues.

Teams currently in Tier 3 must continue to host games behind closed doors, however.
