The 22-year-old, who only joined the Hammers in a £22million deal from Toulouse last summer, made 38 appearances in an impressive debut season in England.

He played a starring role in West Ham’s shock 3-1 win over Manchester United last September, which heaped the pressure on Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

And the Portuguese coach, who was eventually sacked by United chiefs in December, was full of praise for Diop in his post-match interview.

Mourinho said: “He had a fantastic match.

“Congratulations to the scout that found a 21-year-old kid Diop – a monster who dominated in the duels.”

Mourinho tried to sign a central defender in last summer’s transfer market, but failed to land Leicester’s Harry Maguire or Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

Signing a centre-half is believed to be a top priority for United ahead of the 2019/20 season.

They have been linked with moves for Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, £80million-rated Maguire and Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly, who is valued at £100million.
