Boukichou, who had won five consecutive fights upon entering the heavyweight headliner at the Echo Arena, instantly went down clutching his leg in agony, with medics quickly entering the octagon.

The incident evokes memories of the injury sustained by Anderson Silva in his rematch with Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December 2013.

Silva, who lost the first fight by KO, was believed to have cracked his shin in the first round and then in the second, Weidman again checked one of Silva's leg kicks, breaking his left fibula and tibia.

Boukichou was not the only fighter to sustain an injury over the weekend.

Vanessa Porto’s flyweight title fight against Pearl Gonzalez at Invicta FC 34 ended early as well due to an accidental eye poke, leaving the Brazilian with a chunk missing.
