Real Madrid suffer lowest league attendance since 2009 in first LaLiga match since Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus

There were only 48,466 present to see the first match of the campaign in the 81,000-seater ground

Real Madrid began their season with a 2-0 home win against Getafe thank to goals from Gareth Bale and Dani Carvajal - but did so in front of their lowest attendance in nearly a decade.

There were only 48,466 present to see the first match of the campaign. Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't there, kick-off was after 10pm on a Sunday night and many Spanish people are currently on holiday, which would explain why so few people were in the 81,000-capacity Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

In fact it was the lowest number since May 2009 when 44,270 attended a 3-1 home defeat by Real Mallorca, Madrid's fourth consecutive loss in the final season before Ronaldo's £80m arrival from Manchester United.

Ronaldo left for Juventus this summer in a £99m transfer, having scored 451 goals in his 438 appearances, and began life in Serie A with a 3-2 win against Chievo.

"It's not a question of [Bale] following in Ronaldo's wake," Real Madrid defender Nacho told the club's official website. "Cristiano left his mark on a whole era here. Bale is a really key player for us and he's won many trophies here and has nothing to prove to anyone. Everyone knows they can count on him and I'm sure that he'll continue to perform well.

"The fans are fully behind Bale and he's very happy at Real Madrid. We've got some fantastic strikers here."
