‘This is the most average group of players I have ever seen at Manchester United’, blasts Graeme Souness
Souness was speaking during United's surprise 3-2 defeat at Brighton
Graeme Souness launched a scathing attack on Jose Mourinho's Manchester United squad as they suffered a shock 3-2 loss at Brighton.
The Red Devils produced a shambolic display in Sunday's Premier League clash at the Amex, conceding three times in the first half and unable to rescue anything from the game.
Romelu Lukaku's header and Paul Pogba's late penalty restored some pride for the Red Devils but it was generally a calamitous performance by Jose Mourinho's men.
And Souness, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports during the game didn't hold back in his criticism, saying it was the "most average" United side he had seen since before Sir Alex Ferguson took over 32 years ago.
Souness said: "They've been weak, United have been weak.
"Losing individual battles, (Andreas) Pereira and Fred in midfield, what sort of midfield players are they?
"They’re just happy to keep the ball and go square all the time.
"Prior to Fergie going to Man United, this is the most average group of players I’ve ever seen at United. Really.
"They’ve got absolutely nothing about them.
"They’ve got no presence, there doesn’t look like there are any leaders out there that are pointing fingers when things aren’t going well.
"We’ve spoken about United but we’ve also got to give Brighton some credit as well."
Souness also had reservations for comments made by Jose Mourinho earlier this week regarding Manchester City's release of their fly-on-the-wall documentary series.

The Portuguese suggested City "couldn't buy class" when asked about the documentary, a point which City boss Pep Guardiola said he agreed with.
However, Souness was certainly not in agreement with Mourinho.
Souness added: "I think it’s rich coming from Jose, talking about class.
"When you think about some of the, I’m specifically thinking about some of his spats with Arsene Wenger, that wasn’t very classy.
"But I think it’s where we are, we’re in a different media age."
