Revealed: Premier League club captains discussed VAR with referee bosses in special meeting

Premier League club captains have held a meeting with referee bosses to discuss the future of VAR in the game.

Video Assistant Referees are due to be used for the first time at this summer's World Cup despite a controversial trial in some domestic English cup games this season.

The system came under severe fire after a goal was disallowed and a penalty decision overturned in Tottenham's FA Cup replay win over Rochdale, as fans were kept in the dark while lengthy decisions were made.

It has since been approved to be used in Russia this June.

But Watford skipper Troy Deeney has revealed that the Premier League skippers seem largely in favour of using replays to help referees, but believe there is room for improvement after the trials.

"We had a Premier League captains' meeting and the refs' boss Mike Riley touched on VAR there," Deeney revealed. "It has been under the spotlight a lot, so it was good to hear the inside track on a few things."

And Deeney believes the system needs tweaking to assist the crowd and officials.

He added: "I think the referees need protecting and looking after better in this. Could the fans not be informed by the screen or tannoy what's being reviewed. It wouldn't be hard to do."
