Kenya W 3-2 Ethiopia W: Harambee Starlets edge neighbours in five-goal thriller

Genitrix Shikangwa's late strike from the spot inspired Kenya's 3-2 win over Ethiopia in a keenly contested international friendly match in Machakos on Saturday.

The two East African teams were gearing up for this month's second round of the 2020 African Olympic Games qualifying tournament, with the Harambee Starlets coming out on top.

A brace from Mwanahalima Adam plus Shikangwa's late strike ensured David Ouma's ladies outscored their visitors despite Ware Birtukan and Serkadis Kidane's efforts.

The hosts made an impressive start to the encounter as they claimed the lead early through Adam within just seven minutes at the Kenyatta Stadium.

A minute after the restart, Birtukan rose to the occasion by stunning the home side as she netted the equalizer for Selam Zeray's ladies.

Red-hot Adam was in the right place to score her second goal of the match and recover Kenya's lead in the 73rd minute.

However, the Ethiopians quest came to fruition when Kidane struck on the 90th minute to level matters.

In added time, Zeray's side gifted the hosts a penalty advantage following a poor challenge in the area and Shikangwa wasted no chance to fire the Starlets to victory.

The result will inspire confidence within the ranks of the Kenyans as they will face Malawi, with the first leg in Blantyre on August 28, and the return leg at MISC Kasarani on September 1.
