Atletico Madrid looming as attractive dark horses in La Liga

The new La Liga season officially kicks off this weekend when champions Barcelona head to Athletic Bilbao.

Ernesto Valverde’s men eased to a fourth title in five years last season, losing just three games, and will be aiming to win three in a row for the second time this decade, having also done so between 2009 and 2011.

The Blaugrana came under little pressure from Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in their last campaign, with the signings of Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong only likely to assert their supremacy once more.

That makes them very short odds ($1.62) of claiming the La Liga title this season with Real not too far behind ($2.50) despite their recent struggles.

Atletico in fact finished eight points clear of their Madrid rivals last season, yet still loom as a real dark horses, valued at $15 of claiming the league title. 

While Diego Simeone has lost Griezmann up front, the club's recruitment has seen the likes of Joao Feliz, Marcos Llorente and Kieran Tripper brought in. 

If those odds aren't attractive enough for you, Valencia ($91) and Sevilla ($126) are the only other clubs given any chance of conquering La Liga this season.
