Sony Sugar 0-1 Sofapaka: Umaru Kasumba scores again as Batoto ba Mungu move back top

Sofapaka moved back to the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) table thanks to a slim 1-0 win against Sony Sugar.

Batoto ba Mungu had drawn 1-1 with Kariobangi Sharks in their midweek game and any more slipups could have blown away their slim hopes of winning the league this season.

For coach Patrick Odhiambo of Sony Sugar, eyes were set on maximum points following their disappointing 0-0 draw against 11-time league champions Tusker FC last time out in the league.

It was Ugandan striker Umar Kasumba who once again stole the limelight after scoring the only goal of the game, that the John Baraza-led side needed to go top. The goal is Kasumba’s 12th of the season, and is now just behind Allan Wanga of Kakamega Homeboyz, who has scored two more.

Batoto ba Mungu are now leading the race with 48 points, three more than Gor Mahia, who are scheduled to play Ulinzi Stars later on, and Bandari who will play later in the week.

Meanwhile, Zoo Kericho's defeat to Posta Rangers has complicated their survival dreams.

Zoo failed to arrest their bad run at Kenyatta Stadium against Posta Rangers when they conceded two goals either side of half-time in the early kick-off. They failed to follow up on their previous win over Vihiga United last on Thursday.

Zoo last won a league match in March 3, incidentally against Posta Rangers, but have gone on to lose four games. From 24 games they have harvested just 20 points, five more than the bottom-placed Mount Kenya United.

Meanwhile, the Machakos win is a big boost for the Mailmen, who have now moved above the relegation zone, with four points being the gap standing between them and Vihiga United, who are occupying the play-offs spot.

The next match for Zoo will be a home match at Kericho Green Stadium against Mount Kenya United. For Posta Rangers, they will look to build their winning momentum against Kariobangi Sharks on April 27 at Kasarani.
