Babbel showing no mercy as he begins Wanderers clean out

After seeing his side slump to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Central Coast Mariners, Western Sydney Wanderers coach Markus Babbel has promised to make wholesale changes to the squad for next season.

Set to finish eighth this season, the Wanderers have now missed finals football for consecutive seasons - the first time the club has done so.

Already thinking thinking about next season, Babbel stressed change is a must and revealed he's already told some players they will be surplus to requirements.

"Of course, we have to change something and we will change something in the summer (off-season)," Babbel said post-match.

"I was talking to players that they aren’t staying with us, that they won’t get a new contract.

"I hope in the last game we can bring our performance again. They have to, they are professionals, they earn good money and especially our supporters they expect something.

"We have to do a lot, this is what I’ve said from the start. If you want to come back to where the club was, you have to do a lot.

"Most of the players are here two years now and we are finishing 7th, 8th, so we have to change something if you want to become a big dog. We have to bring quality and mentality in.

"It’s not easy for me because I like the boys, they are nice fellas, it’s not easy for me to tell them that I have different plans but we have to change something."

The Wanderers will finish their season against Melbourne Victory next Saturday in what will be their last home game at ANZ Stadium before returning to Parramatta in the new Bankwest Stadium next season.

With club veteran Mark Bridge bowing out of the A-League, other likely departures from Western Sydney over the off-season include imports Alexander Baumjohann, Oriol Riera and Roly Bonevacia.
