Even though 2020 has been challenging for all of us in our own ways, Geoff Keighley confirmed a few weeks back that The Game Awards would still be taking place this year despite some difficult new circumstances. Now, we know just when this year's edition of the annualized awards show will transpire.Keighley took to Twitter this morning to reveal that The Game Awards will take place later this year on Thursday, December 10. As mentioned previously, the show will be entirely online this year to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Per usual, the show will broadcast from Los Angeles, but supporting studio locations in Tokyo and London will also join the fray this year."In 2020, video games have connected and comforted us more than ever, and that makes the 2020 edition of The Game Awards our most important show ever," Keighley said in a supporting press release. "Our team is working hard to deliver an innovative and thoughtful program that celebrates excellence, previews the future, and amplifies important voices that are shaping the future of this medium."

One of the more interesting tidbits so far according to Keighley is that the cutoff date for games to be considered for awards hasn't been decided just yet. In past years, this cutoff date would typically be set for mid-to-late November, at which point any games that came out after this time would not be able to be nominated for awards. However, Keighley says that they haven't decided when this date will be this year. Given that November has some heavy-hitters lying in wait near the end of the month (looking at you, Cyberpunk 2077) you would imagine that the date might be pushed back a bit more than usual this year.

As for other specifics about the show this year, The Game Awards will once again tie into both a sale and a lineup of playable demos that will be available across consoles and PC. The Game Awards Festival, as this latter showcase is called, first came about last year and gave a variety of creators the chance to highlight their upcoming games via these new demos. More details on how this aspect of the event will work in 2020 are said to be coming at a later date.

We'll surely start to hear a whole lot more from Keighley and the team at The Game Awards in the coming weeks as the show continues to draw near, so stay tuned.
