I've seen it mentioned by another CAGer elsewhere, but it's probably worth repeating here in this thread as well. For those who have yet to pick up either a PS5 or Series X, and are in the market, one could take advantage of the current 15% discount on GameStop gift cards at Dollar General to effectively save money on a next gen console once they become more widely available. Given that the GameStop cards are programmable for up to $500, that would mean you could theoretically get a $500 gift card for $425 (or a $400 gift card for $340, if one preferred the PS5 digital edition). From there, it's just a matter of waiting until the desired system(s) become available and then using the gift card(s) for purchase.

All things considered, I suspect this would be the best price option/opportunity for at least the next year when it comes to the new gen hardware and certainly a better choice than paying a scalper $800-1,000 in the gray market. And given that both systems are backwards compatible with the previous generation of games, when you combine that $60-75 discount from the gift card with the prospect/possibility of trading in previous gen hardware (or reselling it on the gray market), the cost for moving to the PS5/Series X generation becomes much more palatable.

I posted this info in the GameStop thread as well, so you may have been thinking of me. Yes, if one really wanted to pick up the PS5 or XSX this year, picking up one of these gift cards would be the way to go. I thought about doing this myself, but I spent enough on games already (thanks to GameStop's crazy sales this time around).

Yeah, what you had posted there previously was extremely clever and worth repeating here. Hope it didn't come across as stepping on your toes or taking credit for the observation. Given that next gen hardware discounts are so rare (particularly this early in its life cycle), I wanted to be sure that any CAGers who had struck out on getting a launch day system could see this potential silver lining, if they had the funds and a bit of patience to persevere. Once prices start hitting the $400-500 range, even a discount as small as 15% off can amount to a good bit of savings. In this case, it buys an extra game or another controller. Hopefully there'll be some people who can benefit from this strategy/opportunity.

I didn't think anything of it. Just popped in to say it was me. I'm still tempted to buy a PS5 this way, ha ha.

Miraculously, the store near my job got more Xbox cards this week after they only had one $25 left in the store on Thanksgiving Day when they were 20% off.

Saturday, December 5th (today) is the last day for this deal.  On Friday, I grabbed another $25 Xbox card and a $25 GameStop card despite the fact that I despise GameStop.

Also, I saw Dollar General's next two weekly ads early on the Couponing Couple website, so I know for a fact that Dollar General will not have another advertised sale on either of these types of credit again before Christmas.

Thanks for the reminder.. do you know if the GameStop gift card diminishes in value in any way over time?

Not to my knowledge, so you will be fine for awhile. It is a stagnant currency, so it will lose value over time with inflation, but that will take several years or decades to notice.

has anyone successfully used this on a choose your value card 25-500$?
Yup, I bought one yesterday for $25. I work myself to death and still manage to stay broke, so I could only invest that much. But just tell the associate how much you want, and it will take the 15% off of whatever amount you tell them you want.

Is the physical ad a different page count than the digital ad? The digital version through the link in the OP has it on page 13.

Beware you also need to account for sales tax in almost all states as regular gift cards are taxed in every state with sales tax.

So I'm not 100% sure on this fact. It could vary depending on the gift card purchased or it could perhaps vary by state, but in my experience, any total requested on a gift card hasn't been subject to sales tax.

For instance, a few weeks ago, I took advantage of the Family Dollar deal on PSN cards and paid $127.50 for $150 of PSN credit. Given that the promotion was 15% off cards that week, I didn't have any sort of sales tax added (based on the math/total). Likewise, with the 10% off gift card promotion today at Target, no sales tax was added to my gift card purchases. Again, not sure if it varies from state to state, but my impression has been that in most instances sales tax isn't assessed until one makes a purchase with the gift card (tax assessed on the item purchased, versus the currency).

Regarding using the hypothetical savings from this promotion for a future next gen console purchase, people earlier in the thread have correctly pointed out that a $500 GameStop gift card wouldn't cover the full cost of the console, due to the tax being added to the $399.99/$499.99 console price after the fact; however, there would still be the roughly $60-75 savings one would get from the discount on the gift card from this deal (since one would currently pay $340 for a $400 card and/or $425 for a $500 card). And if one were so inclined, you could indeed estimate the additional tax cost based on your county/state residency and also buy a second, lesser card that would save 15% off the tax as well.

If you are getting taxed on the gift card at the time of purchase, that would SERIOUSLY suck as it would mean you're effectively being taxed twice. I would be interested in hearing whether other CAGs are paying sales tax for gift cards, and if so, what state you're living in. For reference, I'm out of NC.

And for those still considering this deal, you have just a few more hours to capitalize!

They don't charge tax on gift cards here in VA. Thank God.

If you are paying tax on gift cards I do believe you are getting scammed. That "tax" is going right in the business owners pocket.

Thanks OP. This is really helpful since I’m all out of GS credit. Also picked up some xbox gc that will go towards a series x. My cousin works for Microsoft and gets a 15% discount off consoles including the series x. If I double dip that could be $150 off the series x!

Was able to snag a $319 gift card to make the fortnite edition switch only cost 270 (cost I paid for 319 card) after taxes. Wish I bought a card on Thanksgiving when it was 20 % off. Mental note for next year, grab a card on thanksgiving to load up on even cheaper Black Friday deals

The sale is over.  Now, I'm going to cry every time I see a Dollar General.

Oh, wait.  I already do that.  8-[

Do I went in today to a dollar general and I was able to snag one $500 card for $425.. then I tried to do it again and they got an error. The clerk rushed me away and told me that I can't buy more than one... WTF. After I gave her some time and I cleared my head, I thought maybe the system is doing this as a preventative measure of mistakenly redeeming two cards which makes sense... Anyway, I'm so happy I guess. I guess I'll only be getting a PS5 or an Xbox one, whichever comes first

It's okay, I cry every time I leave a Dollar General. 15% off is barely worth it, but I still go anyway.

I still hope some day I can afford even just one $500 Gamestop card.

Just curious, was it an error on Dollar General’s end? The reason I ask is because it wouldn’t be a stretch for the second transaction to get mistakenly flagged as a fraud prevention measure if you were using a card to pay. Even though it’s the holiday season, I’m guessing banking institutions still have those automated risk mitigation algorithms in place that would lock down a card if multiple large transactions of the same price point come rolling through.

Either way though, congrats on the pick up, and hope you enjoy whichever console you decide upon!

Forgive my typos from above. I used cash. I don't carry around my debit card with me and they didn't have the "tap to pay" function. I learn for next time. I honestly don't know what happened. After the manager told me to have a nice day in a hurry, I turned back to look at him on my walk-of-shame out of the store after he told an employee that needed help to hold on, and saw him squinting to read the print of the error on the receipt that the computer gave him.

Yes, it was a great deal for anyone who had the scratch to be able to buy a next-gen console this year. As the years pass, I realize that I own too many games already, so the GameStop and Xbox cards that I bought were "just in case" cards to use if a good sale comes along.

I might use the GameStop card to re-up on my Pro membership in January, but I hate going into GameStop right now as it is since they're always trying to get me to renew the Pro early or to sell me warranties for stuff in order to meet their numbers. Sheesh! :wall:

Shoot, I only got a Gamestop card to buy last generation games. Must be nice for those with the scratch to get a next-generation console and/or games. I'm trying to just scrape up the scratch and content for a used slim PS4 and an original Xbox One VCR.

Deep down, my gut and the back of my mind is telling me, don't settle for the lesser models; get a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One X. I still got a bunch of PS3/360 games I eventually want to play though.

I'm thinking of renewing using my Pro rewards points.

My local Gamestop's manager has it out for me or something. Never a pleasant experience or just my luck I always catch her on a bad day.

Edit: Looks like this new ad for Dollar General shows Buy two 3 Month PlayStation Plus cards for $24.99 each and save $5. Same story with Google Play cards if that's your thing.

Not a great sale, but still something worth mentioning. In all honesty, I gave up on PS+ when Sony gave up giving "free" PS3 and Vita titles.

And in keeping with the spirit of the Dollar General thread, this week's coupon deal is $5 off of a purchase of any two of the following cards.

Chili's

Cracker Barrel

Domino's

Google Play ($25 card shown in the weekly ad)

PlayStation Plus (3 month (?) membership shown in the weekly ad)

The offer excludes all $10 restaurant cards and the $10 Google Play cards.  Good through 12/12/2020.

There is also a digital coupon for 15% off of a Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop gift card.  It must be added to your Dollar General Rewards  account online, and it expires on 12/12/2020.

Heaven help you if you ask about any of these deals in-store.  They won't have any clue about what you're talking about.

I thought it was a 3 month card. Seems even worse of a deal now.

For what it’s worth, if you’re looking ahead to purchase consoles from either the Xbox One/PS4 generations, it might be worth skipping that generation entirely and instead saving the extra funds for a Series X/PS5. Granted, the console pricing for old gen will be more affordable, but given that both of the latest consoles essentially play all the games from the previous PS4/Xbox One generation (and oftentimes better, especially when looking at load times), it would almost be a bit of hardware future-proofing for you to bypass it entirely. You won’t miss out on the best games of that era either, and they’ll still be dirt cheap price-wise.

Just from my experience, I was originally intending on waiting to get the PS5 like a lot of people, but when Sony sent me an invite to order directly from their site and threw in the promotion of getting 10x the points on my CC for the purchase (essentially a 10% discount), I decided I might as well early adopt. And after getting it set up, I’m glad I did. It’s admittedly a huge chonk of a machine, but it essentially retired my PS4 and allowed me to pull the PS3 back out too. For the foreseeable future, I’m using it as a supercharged PS4. I’m not super stoked about the new generation’s $70 price point for games, but in true CAG fashion I can happily wait for them to drop. All of my gaming pick-ups this holiday season were still firmly PS4 titles.

So again, if you still have PS3/360 games you want to play, I’d say do it. And in the meantime, save up what/where you can for current generation hardware, knowing that you’ll play the best versions of PS4/Xbox One games when you do. Heck, given the supply chain issues right now with both systems, you may find that the extra time saving for a new console may align perfectly with when you can find one. Just some thoughts.

I think you might be right. I will change it in my post, but there isn't a way to magnify the ad online for me to see it more clearer, so it looks the one that is $24.99.
If you're on the weekly ad, you can click on the ad page to bring up a slightly more zoomed-in version of the image. Can confirm it's the $24.99 3-month card.

I was able to purchase a $500 card. The manager informed me, however, that they would not accept Debit or Credit so I had to make a hasty run to 7-Eleven (I live in NYC) to withdraw cash atm charge free (my Credit Union uses the all-purpose atms at 7-Eleven). Couple that with the $50 GameStop card I got from CC reward points and the possibility of trading in my white 500gb slim for $100 and this is a great deal on a new Xbox.
