Heart-stopping video captured the moment a great white shark leapt out of the water and snatched a fish as it was reeled in by a family in Cape Cod Bay.

Captain Marc Costa described the close encounter that took place about three miles west of Great Island in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon.

He said he had just taken a group of people out in his boat, the Columbia, when the shark sprang from the water.

'It came up and it grabbed the fish and then it made a circular leap to get back in the water and go away,' Costa told MassLive. 'It actually slapped the boat with its tail.'

The family of fishermen on the boat cried out as they came face-to-face with the predator.

The family was bringing in their third catch of the day when the shark surged out of nowhere, ripping half of a bass off the line as the family cried out in shock

Costa, a veteran charter boat captain who works for Columbia Sportfishing in Orleans, said he's fairly certain the thief was a great white.

The shark ripped half of a bass off the line before the family reeled in what was left.

Columbia Sportsfishing shared the video on their Instagram page, calling it 'a real-life episode of shark week today in Cape Cod Bay'.

Costa's crew had another encounter with a much larger shark 10 days earlier about two miles south of Saturday's incident.

Sharks sightings in Cape Cod are not uncommon, as the animals come to the area to prey upon seals.

Two beaches were temporarily closed on Sunday after shark sightings, one at Race Point Beach in Provincetown and another at Nauset Beach off Orleans.

Last year one man was killed and another was seriously injured in shark attacks.
