This shimmering slice of steak certainly is a cut above the rest.

The Nusr-Et steak restaurant in Dubai, owned by Turkish celebrity chef Salt Bae, is offering guests gold-plated hunks of beef for $1,250 AED (£268/$340) a pop.

One diner who recently ate at the restaurant told MailOnline Travel that it was the 'best steak he'd ever tasted' but was unsure if it was the gold that made the difference.

However, he said that the metallic morsel was certainly more 'glamorous' than the average chop and 'attracted a lot of attention from fellow diners'. 

The restaurant-goer, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that while the special sirloin steak is expensive, you get a fair amount of bang for your buck.

He explained: 'The meat is also cooked and cut at your table in front of you with this sort of pantomime show from the chef. 

'It starts off like a big brick of gold and "the show" finishes with the chef sprinkling salt down his arm and stabbing the knife into the table.

'It is great fun, the food was amazing. Very expensive and very "Dubai" too. It was a good experience but I wouldn't be queuing up for round two so quickly.' 

The swanky steak, incidentally, is covered with 24-karat gold leaf, which is safe to eat as pure gold is chemically inert. This means the precious metal passes through the digestive system without being absorbed into the body. 

For those with less cash to splash, non-gold dusted pieces of steak start from $340 AED (£72, $92) at Nusr-Et Dubai. 

Salt Bae, real name Nusret Gokce, owns a chain of Nusr-Et restaurants and is known for his theatrical salt-sprinkling antics.

He went viral in 2017 after posting videos of himself salting meat and now has more than 21 million Instagram followers. His restaurants in the Middle East, New York and Miami charge several hundred dollars for some cuts of meat.

Now the restaurant is beloved by a roster of celebrities with past patrons including David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio and P Diddy. 

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the prime minister and vice-president of the United Arab Emirates, is also a fan.
