An NHS mental health trust criticised over failings that led to the fatal stabbing of a grandmother has been fined £300,000 after a violent patient almost killed two members of staff.

Paranoid schizophrenic Myha Grant, 30, grabbed a kitchen knife from healthcare assistant Francis Barrett at the Bracton Centre in Dartford, Kent, in July 2016 before attacking him. Nurse Julius Falomo was also stabbed 17 times when he tried to intervene.

The Health and Safety Executive recently ruled that Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the medium-security unit, had failed to risk-assess patients.

News of the payout comes just two months after the MoS told how Oxleas staff had released psychotic patient Nicola Edgington four years after she killed her mother. While free, she killed grandmother Sally Ann Hodkin, 58.
