Shoppers were left stunned after spotting a Tesco Easter egg on sale for £96 in an embarrassing pricing blunder.

The 245g hand-decorated Belgian milk chocolate egg, though luxurious-looking, left customers baffled when it was spotted on sale in Somerset for nearly £100.

A photo was posted on the Facebook page Radio Ninesprings this week, showing the egg along with a price tag which read '£480 per 100g'.

They wrote: 'Surely, this is a pricing mistake. Would you pay over £90 for a single Easter Egg?'

Commenters on social media were outraged by the seemingly pricey chocolate treat  which has racked up dozens of shares and comments online.

One person wrote in disbelief: 'Oh my God. Who would pay £96 for an Easter Egg?

Another disgruntled chocoholic said: 'Eyewatering. Who in their right mind would pay that for an Easter Egg?'

While one user mocked the price, writing: 'What an EGGSTREME bargain!'

Others were more surprised that Tesco had already rolled out its seasonal chocolate, with Joanna Shortland writing: 'More to the point, Easter eggs are already out?!'

Tesco confirmed that the price was down to a ticketing error and the egg was closer to £9.60 than it was £96 - insisting nobody else will see that egg on sale at that price.

However the 'eggstortionate' pricing mix-up was also spotted by Twitter user @Knight_Radiant, who wrote: 'Damn, I knew Easter eggs [were] overpriced, but wow! Breaking new ground here.'

A Tesco spokesman said: 'The correct price for the Easter egg is £10 and we've already changed the label in store to the correct price.'
