Man, 41, appears in court charged with the murder of 11-year-old boy who was found injured near country park and died later that day

A 41-year-old man has been charged with the murder of 11-year-old boy who was found injured near country park and died later that day.

Michael Harrison, of Eaton Terrace, Nottingham, has been charged with murder and appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today.

The 41-year-old, who gave his address as no fixed abode, was not required to enter any pleas during a short hearing at the magistrates' court.

Dressed in a black t-shirt and black trousers, he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth before being remanded into custody. Harrison will appear at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday.

He has also been charged with engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour in relation to a woman, between January 1 last year and July 1 this year. 

David Martin, chair of the bench, said: 'I hope you understand what happened there? We are remanding you into custody and you will appear at Derby Crown Court tomorrow at 10am.'

Mr Harrison's solicitor, Denney Lau, did not apply for bail on his client's behalf.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found injured near Shipley Country Park, Derbyshire, on the afternoon of Saturday, June 18. 

Police said that ambulance crews were called out to Thorpes Road, near to the park in Heanor, following reports that the 11-year-old had suffered injuries. He died later that day.

Last week, Derbyshire police arrested the 41-year-old in connection with the boy's death, following an investigation.

Officers from both Derbyshire Constabulary and the East Midlands major crime unit will be continuing with their inquiries, remaining in the area over next few days.

They are also searching for a white Vauxhall Combo van that may be displaying the registrations FL54 JBJ, FL54 JDJ, or FG57 FTO.

A spokesperson for the force added: 'No further information into the circumstances is available at this time, but we will be issuing further witness appeals over the coming days.'
