Stunning images from around the world… all taken on a PHONE: The winners of Apple's 2021 iPhone Photography Awards include a Moroccan market at dusk, the Northern Lights, dreamy Dutch windmills at sunrise and a ‘man on Mars’

  • Judges had to choose from thousands of photos to pick winners of Apple's 2021 iPhone Photography Awards 
  • Among them, Dutch windmills glow at sunset, a woman sees the Aurora Borealis, and a man 'walks on Mars'
  • Istvan Kerekes, a Hungarian photographer, took home the Grand Prize for his photograph of two Transylvanian Shepherds, each with a lamb under their arm in a snow-covered muddy field in Romania

A series of stunning pictures have been revealed as the winners of Apple's 2021 iPhone Photography Awards.

Dreamy dutch windmills at sunrise, the Northern Lights from a mountain top and breathtaking views over New York City are among the most notable photographs captured on the world's best-selling smartphones from around the world, and to be named as winners in the 14th year of the awards.

The overall winner was Istvan Kerekes, whose gritty image of two burly Transylvanian Shepherds had a knock-out effect on the judges. 

The Hungarian photographer's photo shows two rugged shepherds in a snowy, industrial landscape with lambs tucked under their arms while factories pump out smoke in the background. It was taken in Transylvania, Romania.

The aptly named Magic of Aurora Borealis snap (pictured) won Russian photographer Tatiana Merzlyakova first place in the travel category. The enchanting photo makes a figure in a silver coat look like a space explorer as they gaze out at the alien green lights above Teriberka, Russia.

Indian snapper Sharan Shetty won the first place photographer of the year for her snap titled Bonding, an intimate picture that shows an elderly man in Baku, Azerbaijan, giving his horse an eskimo kiss in an empty landscape.

Dan Liu of China was a close second in the category as his out of this world image A Walk on Mars shows an astronaut wandering the red planet.

Liz Huang won the city life category with a stunning aerial photo showing workers atop a high-rise building in Manhattan, with views of New York.

And Claire Droppert's beautiful photo 'A Dutch Morning' was worthy winner of the sunset snaps, with a piece Vincent Van Gough would be proud of.

It shows the pink-orange early morning light spilling across a lake and five grand windmills in Kinderdijk, Holland.

An awards spokesperson said: 'The 14th Annual Awards recognise photographs taken over a remarkable year of grief and loneliness.

'But despite a global pandemic, the winning images all glimpse moments of beauty, hope and the endurance of the human spirit.'
