Thanos is a Marvel Comics cosmic being that got a hold of the Infinity Stones. In the movie, he used the stones to eliminate half the population of the universe in order to free up resources for the survivors.

Actually, I first thought this was about Theranos, the multi-billion dollar company formed to create specialized blood tests. The company and founder, the vivacious Elizabeth Holmes, were both discovered to be fake.

Sounds like a poorly conceived stunt. If even 10% of the banned users never come back, that reduces Reddits user base by 5%, and it does not sound like they have a robust user base to begin with.

It’s all in fun and everybody knows it. Reddit users aren’t easily put off by stunts like these. They actually like to participate in things like this.
They might lose a few casual users, but the regular users understand that it isn’t meant to mean anything.

In this instance, the comic book was better than the movie on the same order of magnitude that Heinlein's book Starship Troopers was better than the movie of the same name.
